Softcover. Zustand: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. British merger policy, which has long lacked clarity and effectiveness, has been the subject of government review. This collection of essays by leading policymakers and academics confronts several crucial questions about the merger process: Does it serve as a check on management efficiency, or is it the result of too little control or too much management discretion? Do shareholders and consumers gain or lose from mergers? Is the effect of mergers on competition the only public concern, and how anyway is competition to be assessed in an economy increasingly dominated by imports? Can policymakers learn from abroad, or are the current institutions and procedures the best available?

In den Warenkorb1st Edition? 12mo. pp. 40; folding engraved frontispiece plan of the battle. No wrappers. Almost certainly the first edition of this work which is rare with only the National Maritime Museum holding a copy. Later editions had a different representation of the battle of Trafalgar which identified individual ships with a key. It is likely that this edition was rushed out following the news of Nelson's death and later editions were amended to show the correct disposition of the fleets.

012031 John Fairburn, 110 Minories, London. 24 Bl., kompl. Schabl.-kol. Radierung, 86x51 mm, rechteckige Ecken. Fragen und Antworten ergeben eher angestrengte oder unsinnige Wortspiele, deren Lösung zum Glück gleich mitgegeben wird, zum Beispiel: What fruit is held in highest estimation at Court - The Windsor pair (Pear), oder When is a Pickpocket like a Reporter - When he takes Notes, oder Why is a Window like the tooth Ache - Because it is pane full (painful), oder Why is a Sick man like Sunday - Because he appears Weakly (Weekly). 012031 John Fairburn, 110 Minories, London. 24 cards, complete. Stencil-col. etching, 86x51 mm, square corners. Backs: Plain white, without imprint. Circa 1835. The cards come from a sheet that has been cut out into its individual parts. They have been relined with laid paper, probably in recent times. They depict more or less caricatured types of people, each accompanied by a letter. The figures are named at the top (King God bless him, Fatima Faithful, Rosetta Rosebud, Gipsy Queen, Dame Drinkwell, Jolly Nose, Diana Diamond Eyes.), with questions at the bottom. These have no relation to the figures. The answers are on the separate lower part of the sheet. Questions and answers result in rather strained or nonsensical puns, the solution to which is fortunately given immediately, for example: What fruit is held in highest estimation at Court - The Windsor pair (Pear), or When is a Pickpocket like a Reporter - When he takes Notes, or Why is a Window like the tooth Ache - Because it is pane full (painful), or Why is a Sick man like Sunday - Because he appears Weakly (Weekly). The letter I of the answers mentions Brougham, who became Lord Chancellor in 1830. John Fairburn seems to have been active at the address given from 1819 to 1843. Some occasional soiling, slightly worn.

[London]: Printed and Published by J. Fairburn, Featherstone, Street City Road [and] Published Oct[obe]r 1st, 1839 by J. Fairburn, 110 Minories. Two handcoloured prints, each bordering calligraphed bible verses, name and date. The first (384 x 486 mm) shows ?Paul Preaching at Athens?, six smaller scenes from the Book of Acts, and a tailpiece with obelisks and palms, framing the handwritten text of Acts 17: 22-25. The other (375 x 468 mm) shows ?The Lord?s Supper?, six smaller scenes from the Book of Luke, and a tailpiece with arks, lambs and palms, framing the handwritten text of Luke 22:14-21. Both sheets very good with some light soiling, mounted on cardstock; a 260mm closed tear through the center of the Lord?s Supper sheet is neatly conserved. ? Two well-preserved writing blanks, each completed with bible verses in manuscript by one John Fitch, the first in December 19th 1848, and the second almost exactly a year later in December 18th 1849. Fitch was presumably a schoolboy and these two handwriting exercise rather sweetly preserve his progress from one year to the next. The publisher, John Fairburn, printed and sold caricatures, popular prints, maps, light pornography, and chapbooks in Regency London. ?Of Fairburn we know that there was more than one John Fairburn from the same family active in the publishing and print selling trade from about the 1790s through 1840. But there is no doubt that the John Fairburn of 110 Minories was William Hone?s main rival as a radical bookseller during this period, before the great Victorian reaction, and that both publishers were part of a small London based coterie of radical Methodists and infidels that grew up around the great engravers William Hogarth, Thomas Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, and Isaac Cruikshank, and the land reformer Thomas Spence? (Ken Giese of Between the Covers).
