Tras el acuerdo matrimonial entre Felipe III y Margarita de Austria-Estiria, rubricado en Graz, la corte imperial de Praga, por Georg Stöbaus, obispo de Levant, y el embajador Guillem de Santcliment, el 30 de septiembre de 1598 empezaría el largo viaje de la futura reina de las Españas junto a la descrita como una de las mayores cortes errantes de toda Europa. Divulgada la noticia, poco tardó en llegar a oídos del papa Clemente VIII, que no se limitaría a darles su bendición a los contrayentes, sino que propuso oficiar dicha ceremonia en Ferrara, donde se hallaba desde el 8 de mayo, con motivo de la devolución de la ciudad al Estado de la Iglesia tras la muerte del duque Alfonso II de Este. Dado que buena parte del periplo tuvo lugar en tierras italianas, la boda en el ducado estense avivó la curiosidad de gacetilleros y cronistas, generando una fértil catarata de textos: algunos se cifran en la entrada de Margarita, o bien en sus nupcias, mientras que otros procuran resumir de forma exhaustiva el paso de aquel séquito por la primera ciudad moderna del viejo continente. Margarita d'Austria [. ] con tutti li preparamenti fatti dalla Santità di N. S. Clemente papa VIIII per tal effetto. Con minuto ragguaglio della Messa Pontificale cantata da Sua Beatitudine et delle ceremonie delli sposalizi fatti nella Chiesa Cattedrale di detta città, domenica alli 15. del medesimo (Roma, Nicolò Muzi, 1598) de Giovanni Paolo Mucanzio (1557-1617), secretario de la Sacra Congregazione dei Riti, que describe los ritos desde la llegada de la soberana, el 13 de noviembre, hasta su salida cinco días más tarde. Todavía en 1598, las prensas de Muzi publicaron asimismo la traducción española a cargo de Andrés Catalán: Relación de la solemne entrada hecha en Ferrara a los 13 días de Noviembre M. D. XCVIII. por la Serenísima S. doña Margarita de Austria (R). Y solo un año después llegaría a Toledo, donde Pedro Rodríguez se responsabilizó de dar a los tórculos una nueva tirada (T). La collatio de estas ediciones que transmiten la versión de Catalán ha revelado la presencia de copiosas variantes.
