Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition, Special Edition. Octavos of various sizes, wrappers, 13 volumes (all published). Published from 1924 to 1948. Various editors and art directors. Book design and illustrations by Karel Teige, Jindřich Štyrský, Toyen, Ladislav Sutnar, Josef Sudek and many others. Each work illustrated with photos and artwork. Kmen was a bookstore central to Czech modernist and avant-garde activity, an outlet and meeting ground for artists and intelligentsia. The Almanach Kmene was an annual summary of the editors' picks in literature, music, drama and the visual arts, both local and international. It was especially extensive as a chronicle of the photography, art and design developing in the First Republic of Czechoslovakia and is replete with images, drawings, photos, portraits, page design and typography carrying the spirit of the era. The Kmen bookstore soon branched into a readers' club which served as an outlet for new thinking in philosophy and politics as well as art and culture. Both bookstore and club were closed by the German occupation and opened briefly after the war, only to suffer the same fate imposed by the communist régime which took power in 1948. This full set includes the extra numbers published in the late winter and spring which appeared for a few years. Condition very good+ to fine; some years uncut. Josef Sudek, Josef Capek, Ladislav Sutnar, Vojtech Tittelbach, Toyen, Jindrich Styrsky, Antonin Pelc, (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Folios and Quartos in ½-cloth and wrappers; 5 volumes (all published). Kmen (The Tribe) was a weekly review of art and cultural topics initially headed by Frantisek Xaver Salda (1867-1937), literary critic, journalist and author, a pioneer in Czech modernism and author of the Manifesto outlining the aspirations and visions for new literature. He is an important figure of the intelligentsia in the First Republic. Classically liberal in his politics, he was close to Stanislav K. Neumann and Karel Vanek who embraced harder leftist causes. Neumann (1875-1947) was a major contributor to the art and literary modernist and avant-garde from the early days of Czech cubism, Futurism, and experimental expressionism, a poet, novelist, critic who evolved into a foremost voice of the left; he edited some of the most important journals and anthologies of the day and strongly promoted a new socialist vision with special emphasis on the arts. This first cycle of the journal was highly esteemed for its intellectual and cultural contribution to the First Republic, and its evolution over five years increasingly introduced the avant-garde to a wider reading public. Its contributors include an international cast and the best minds of the day in Czechia --- Otakar Fischer, Jakub Deml, Karel and Josef Capek, Karel Teige, J. van der Velde, Martin Buber, Jan Zrzavy, Vlastislav Hofman, Pavel Janák, Zdenek Nejedly, Vaclav Tille, Richard Weiner, among many others, as well as international figures introduced new thought and cultural horizons in poetry, literature, and the visual arts. Many vignettes and visuals throughout by Zdenek Kratochvil. Kmen reappeared in 1928 with Salda giving the editorial reigns to Julius Fucik to lead the second life of the journal with breaks until 1937, an entirely different thrust and not to be confused in content or vision with the first series present here. The present includes the third year (1920) with full size original linocuts (33x25.5 cm.) by Josef Capek and Karel Teige, and the very scarce fifth year of 1922 which appeared in 6 numbers with the subtitle Umelecky mesicnik (Art Monthly), dedicated to contemporary visual culture. Year V includes reproductions (one in full color) or works by Kremlicka, Wachsman, Kubista, Süss, and Muzika inter alia. This set is an important document, as it chronicles the rapid shifts of art and literature, political and social theory, in the early years of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia. OCLC locates one institutional holding of years 1-4 (Univ Chicago); one complete worldwide at NKC. Condition very good+ to fine.…
