Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'British Columbia, the Making of a Province' offers a comprehensive exploration of the formative years of Canada's westernmost province. Written by the esteemed historian F. W. Howay, this work chronicles the transition of the region from a vast wilderness into a structured political entity within the Canadian Confederation. The narrative spans the early maritime explorations of the Pacific coast, the establishment of the mainland and island colonies, and the transformative impact of the gold rushes that drew thousands to the Fraser River and the Cariboo.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. The Canadian Historical Studies series. xii, [4], 156 p. 25 cm. 8 maps and charts. Blue cloth hardcover with gold impressing. Faint number on lower spine. Spine a bit faded. Occasional thumbing or soiling but overall very clean. Title continues: "Containing, Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares by George Dixon, An Answer to Mr. George Dixon, by John Meares, and Further Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares, by George Dixon." Dixon and Meares were sea captains working for competing British fur trading companies. They managed to get in each other's way while on an expedition to the northwest coast of North America in 1786-87. Meares' published criticisms of George Dixon led the latter to publish a pamphlet about Meares' self-aggrandizement and false claims about discoveries really made by others. Messy late 18th-century politics. Edition of 500 copies of which this is no. 439.

The narrative spans the early maritime explorations of the Pacific coast, the establishment of the mainland and island colonies, and the transformative impact of the gold rushes that drew thousands to the Fraser River and the Cariboo. The book details the complex socio-political challenges faced by early settlers and administrators, including the resolution of boundary disputes and the eventual decision to join the Dominion of Canada in 1871. Through a detailed analysis of economic development and institutional growth, Howay illustrates how the unique geography and resources of the Pacific Northwest shaped the identity of British Columbia. This historical account remains an essential resource for those interested in the pioneering spirit and political evolution that defined the province during its crucial early decades. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Vol. 2: [6]vii-xiv[2]1-727p. Frontispiece black and white portrait of F.W. Howay and profusely illustrated with black and white captioned photos. Both volumes bound in in 3/4 leather and blue cloth with gilt letters on the spine. Marbled endpapers and top edges gilt. Both volumes have wear to extremities with corners rubbed through, leather starting to dry out, gilt bright, just hints of foxing here and there, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Alas, these volumes are not whole and complete. As often happens with multiple volume works that are reprinted, signatures, as well as illustrations, are duplicated or missing. In Vol. 1, between pp. 83 and 97, there are 10 illustrations, which are not listed in the List of Illustrations, and which actually appear between the same pages in Vol. 2. Missing from Vol. 1 in these pages are two illustrations: p.84, A Man and Woman of Nootka Sound, and p.94, Mount St. Elias and the New Eddystone. In Vol. 2, the signature containing pp. 545-560 is missing; p. 544 has an image of the Legislative Assembly 1909, which is not listed in the List of Illustrations; and pp. 673-690 are duplicated. Otherwise, all illustrations are present and in fine condition. There is no date of publication listed in Vol. 1; but Vol. 2 has the date 1914 printed on the title page. NOTE: Price reflects these defects and extra postage will be required for shipping these heavy volumes.
