Travel diary by the chaplain to the Duke of Brunswick's Dragoon Regiment hired by the British during the Revolutionary War as mercenaries. Rev. Frederick Valentine Melsheimer (1749-1814) was a Lutheran clergyman and early American entomologist, author of the first major entomological work in the U.S.A., A Catalogue of Insects of Pennsylvania (1806). He arrived in Canada in 1776 to fight alongside British troops in the War of Independence. He was taken proisoner by the American Army in 1777 following their victory at the Battle of Bennington and was in prison for 14 months. Afterwards he resigned from his office of chaplain and began to preach in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, hence his book about beetles in that particular state. This work describes his sea voyage and his impressions of Quebec City and its inhabitants.…
