Louis Leipoldt, the South African poet. B/w maps and illustrations; index. Writing on front endpaper in green pencil, apparently by Leipoldt; also an 'ex libris' sticker and a name and address stamp; cover largely clean though a little bumped and rubbed around the edges; front inner hinge split, but cover still secure; pages rather tanned at the edges, and with occasional marginal notes and marks in pencil. Overall a copy that has lived, shows its age in numerous signs, and is nevertheless still quite clean and sound. NB: An extra shipping charge may be requested for heavier or more valuable items. Octavo, 351pp, [1]. Green cloth, title stamped in gilt. The first English language edition, as stated on the copyright page. Preceded by the "Afrikaans Edition," published March, 1928. Internally clean, solid text block. American Embassy stamp on the front free endpaper. Complete with frontispiece portrait of General Botha, 26 illustrations and four maps. In the publisher's dust jacket, short closed tear along front hinge, light soiling to the spine, a very good example. Louis Botha (1862-1919) was the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1910 until his death. Known for his pragmatism, he shifted from military resistance to political reconciliation, cooperating with Britain to stabilize the new state. His leadership helped define South Africa's early institutions and its decision to fight alongside Britain in World War I.
