In a contemporary full vellum binding. Third edition, substantially revised from the preceding English editions. Illustrated with wood engravings after works by the Old Masters, drawn on wood by George Scharf, Jun. With sixty-three plates to volume I, volume II is illustrated with forty-five plates, and a folding plate to the rear. Collated, complete. Kugler's original German Handbuch der Geschichte der Malerei appeared in 1837; the Italian portion was first translated into English in 1842. Franz Theodor Kugler (1808-1858) was a German art historian and cultural administrator for the Prussian state. His influential handbooks sought to provide a systematic historical treatment of European art. The English translation was made by Lady Eastlake, Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake, (1809-1893), the prominent art historian and critic, and edited with extensive notes by her husband, Sir Charles Lock Eastlake (1793-1865), painter, scholar, President of the Royal Academy and later the first Director of the National Gallery. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpapers from one F. Nina Radice, dated 1860. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned with the odd light spot, heavier to first and last few leaves, fore edge, and margins of plates.
