Four folding colour maps, xi + 311 pages 26.5 x 18 cms; original papered boards (spotted and a trifle scuffed), linen backstrip with paper title label (worn); foredges and endpapers spotted, a few leaves toned, but on the whole in very good condition, the maps particularly bright and clean. A remarkable association copy: the author Frederick Blyth Wace's copy with his inked initials to the front free endpaper, and his humorous (unpublished?) foreword tipped in opposite the preface, together with a dedication leaf both in Wace's hand and his business card loose within. As a further dedication makes clear, this copy was given by Wace's son (a couple of his loose notes on scrap paper are included), the eminent botanist Nigel Morritt Wace (1929-2005), late head of the Australian National University's department of Biogeography and Geomorphology in 2003 to his fellow academic and marsupial biologist Dr. Hugh Tyndale-Biscoe. Both Wace and Biscoe were born in India and began their schooling in Kashmir at the school founded by Tyndale-Biscoe's father, a Christian missionary and for whom the school is named. FROM OCTOBER 1885-MAY 1886 . * Sir Frederick Samuel August Bourne CMG [1854-1940] was a British judge and diplomat who served in China. His last positions before retirement were as Assistant Judge of the British Supreme Court for China and Judge of the High Court of Weihaiwei. . He was an astute and bright person who made copious and useful notes along his journey. He also provided a lengthy vocabulary of Lolo language. . His report is lucid and full of fascinating observations and useful information gathering, rather than being the usual dull and dry report, this one is far and above the average! . The report also has 7 route sketch maps, giving details of altitude, list of rivers, towns, villages, copious chart of temperature [max-minimum], barometer readings, temperature i Fahrenheit, heights above sea level, with additional remarks dates and times. This vast chart applies to every place he visited, some 270 in all. Observations of latitudes, non-Chinese races, list of tribes, Miao-tzu vocabulary, list of botanical specimens &c. . Note, Bourne was also a keen botanist. He collected various botanical samples when in China and has two species of plants named after him, the Bournea sinensis and Bournea leiophylla. . This report also contains copious correspondence from Bourne to Sir J. Walsham the Earl of Rosebery & Marquis of Salisbury. . *** After passing the exam was appointed a student interpreter in China, March 1876. . Bourne served as consul all over China, including Guangzhou, Chongqing, Pagoda Island (near Fuzhou), Wuhu and Tamsui (near Taipei). . While in Chongqing he had gone on a six-month tour through modern-day Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou to report on the potential for trade. . This item is his official report, it was presented to both Houses of the British Parliament in June 1888.
