Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-This work, which is based upon papers read before the Royal Asiatic Society in 1901, was, at first, intended to refer only to Indian Serpent-worship. It was soon found, however, that the Serpent-worship of India did not originate in that country, but was, in fact, a branch of the worship of the Sun and the Serpent, which was once well-nigh universal. It became evident, therefore, that a history of the Indian cult would go far to explain the nature and origin of serpent-worship, in other countries and in other times. It will be seen that some of the views, expressed in this volume, differ from those which have been held by some Oriental scholars of great eminence. These views, however, have not been put forward without due consideration. They are the result of much reflection, observation, and inquiry, combined with a careful study of local tradition and folk-lore. It was first published in 1905, is a rare manuscript, the original residing in one of the great libraries of the world. About the Author:--Charles Frederick Oldham was a British medic and religious historian. He joined the Indian Medical Service as an assistant physician and was appointed surgeon on July 27, 1871. He served in the Aligarh Levy, which were dissolved in 1888 in the course of the Rawalpindi Review, then in the 39th Bengal Native Infantry. In the 1860s he worked as a doctor in Gurdaspur and Dalhousie in the Punjab and as a medical officer in the princely state of Bahawalpur in Cholistan. The promotion to Surgeon Major took place on July 1, 1873.Oldham's early publications dealt with medical issues, particularly malaria . As a result, he became more and more interested in geographical and, in particular, reli 0g0ious-historical topics, whereby his good knowledge of northern India and Afghanistan, which he had acquired during his military career, benefited. In particular, Oldham was concerned with the question of serpent worship. The Title 'The Sun And The Serpent: A Contribution To The History Of Serpent-Worship written/authored/edited by C. F.
