The Vinaya Pitaka is divided into the five books: Paragika, Pakittiya, Mahavagga, Kullavagga and Parivara-patha.These books constitute that part of the sacred literature of Buddhists which contains the regulations for the outward life of the members… of the Buddhist Samgha nearly the oldest and probably the most influential of all fraternities of monks. The Patimokkha the meaning of the name will be discussed later on seems to have owed its existence to the ancient Indian custom of holding sacred two periods in each month the times of the Full Moon and of the New Moon. Mahavagga contains ten chapters: The first chapter is simply called the great chapter; it starts with a narrative beginning immediately after the Buddha's enlightenment. The second deals with the recitation of the Patimokkha, which is to take place every half month (at new and full moons) wherever there is a quorum of four monks. Then comes provision for the retreat for three months in the rainy season, when monks are supposed to stay in one place except for specified reasons. at the end of the retreat they must invite their colleagues to say if they have any criticisms of their behaviour. The fifth chapter is called the chapter on hides and deals with various topics. The next chapter is on medicines; a passage authorizing inhalation of smoke through a tube is used by some modern monks to justify smoking. The next chapter is called kathina, the process of making monastic robes, but is in fact about the exemptions granted monks from certain rules in consequence of this. robe material. Kullavagga contains twelve chapters: the first deals with various procedures to be followed in dealing with badly behaved monks. The next deals with probation for monks guilty of certain offences (see Suttavibhanga). The next chapter deals with the case where a monk on probation commits a further offence. explanation of the seven rules for settling disputes. About the Author:- Friedrich Max Müller (1823 1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the Pali Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. He was born at Colchester in Essex, England, the eldest son of a Congregational clergyman from Wales, who was affectionately referred to as the Bishop of Essex. His mother, who died at the age of 37 following childbirth, had run the Sunday school at his father's church. In 1894 Rhys Davids married Caroline Augusta Foley, a noted P?li scholar. His 1881 study on Buddhism, entitled Buddha: Sein Leben, Seine Lehre, seine Gemeinde, based on P?li texts, popularized Buddhism and has remained continuously in print since its first publication. With T. W. Rhys Davids, he edited and translated into English three volumes of Theravada Vinaya texts, two volumes of the (Vedic) Grhyasutras and two volumes of Vedic hymns on his own account, in the monumental Sacred Books of the East series edited by Max Müller. With his Prolegomena (1888), Oldenberg laid the groundwork to the philo.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the book:-The Grihya-Sutras, Rules of Vedic Domestic Ceremonies Part I contains: Sankhyayana-Grihya-sutra, Asvalayana-Grihya-sutra, Paraskara-Ghrihya-sutra, Khadia-Grihya-sutra, This is part one of two of the Sacred Books of the East translation of the Grihya Sutras. The Grihya S…utras are a collection of late Vedic-era (ca. 500 BCE) household rituals and regulations, many reflecting much more ancient traditions. It is like reading a time-travelling ethnographer's field notes in Vedic India. Included are fertility and marriage ceremonies, ritual purity laws, plus material on initiations, funerals and other rites of passage. This volume also includes a complete Sanskrit transliteration of the text of the Khadira-Grihya-Sutra. The Gnhya-siitra ascribed to Sankhiyana, which has been edited and translated into German in the XVth volume of the Indische Studien, is based on the first of the four Vedas, the Rig-veda in the Bishkala recension and among the Brahmana texts, on the Kaushltakn.
