The book actually comprises three treatises: (1) a refutation of Spinoza according to "the common method" - imposed by the Sorbonne for the publication of the work; (2) proof of the possibility of the Incarnation; (3) a refutation of The Ethics geometrically. These treaties are preceded by a warning which underlines the urgency of a rebuttal. Dom Francois Lamy was a Benedictine French Cartesian, "one of the strongest Cartesians to be found in France (according to Leibniz). A nobleman who had abandoned arms for the cloisters in 1658, Lamy, long an inmate of the prestigious Congregation de Saint-Maur, became his order's most adept philosopher [who believed that] Spinozism was making disconcertingly rapid progress, especially among the upper echelons of French society" (Israel, Radical Enlightenment, 488). Lamy represents the leading edge of the intellectual movement to combat Spinoza's ideas with philosophy rather than theology, leaning into the dualism of Descartes as a way to separate the materialism of Spinoza from the idealism of the church. While standard bibliographies primarily list Jean de Nully as the publisher in Paris, limited variant imprints bearing Laurent Roulland's name exist for this exact first edition. The 1696 Paris edition was financed and sold primarily by Jean de Nully (often referred to as J. de Nully). However, bookbinders and publishers occasionally shared sheets and co-published, which is why some rare surviving copies feature the name of Laurent Roulland (L. Roulland) on the title page. It was common for several booksellers to join forces to print and distribute the same work, which explains the presence of the following two names on the title page. Nully (Jean de Nully) : Famous bookseller and Parisian printer, installed rue Saint-Jacques. Roulland (Louis Roulland) : Another great Parisian bookseller-printer on the same street, who co-edited and sold the work. This copy is the rarer imprint L. Roulland. Van der Linde 388. Rare. CONDITION: Very good or better in contemporary calf with gilt spine. Minor loss to head and heel of spine. Minor edgewear. Minimal contemporary annotations to title page. Book is tight and pages clean throughout. Excellent copy of a scarce book from the enlightenment.

William Crookes was the first to observe Thallium (1861) as he found a new green line in a selenium sample, but Lamy was the first to isolate it and to prove that it was a metal (1862). The paper offered is Lamy's full description of his discovery, a shorter announcement was published in "Comptes rendus", 23 June 1862.Claude-Auguste Lamy (1820-1878) examined some slime from a sulfuric acid plant at Loos which was using Belgian pyrite and observed the green spectral line. He extracted thallium sesquichloride and isolated the metal new by electrolysis. Only after his discovery, he found out that Crookes had earlier discovered and named the new element, and gave Crookes the honour. Crookes presumed that his Thallium was something of the order of Sulphur, Selenium or Tellurium but Lamy found it to be a metal. In April 1862 he reported to the French Académie des sciences.
