Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: Sir Edward West was a British King's Judge who served in India, upholding British honor and fair play against greed and injustice. He was known for his moral integrity and believed that what was morally wrong could not be politically right. However, little has been made public about his life in India, and the Dictionary of Biography only knows him as a political economist. About the Author: Frederick Dawtrey Drewitt (1848-1942) was born at Burpham, Surrey, He was educated at Winchester and Christ Church, Oxford. He took a natural science degree in 1871 and then began his medical studies at St. George's Hospital. He qualified in 1876 and was given house appointments at his own Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children and the Belgrave Hospital for Children. His honorary appointments were at the Victoria Hospital for Children, from 1881 to 1887, and the West London Hospital, from 1882 to 1902. He devoted himself for the long remaining years of his life to the study of birds and flowers. He served on committees concerned with the preservation of natural life and represented the Royal College of Physicians in the management of the Chelsea Physic Garden till 1941. He wrote, in 1923, The Romance of the Apothecaries' Garden, which reached a third edition. The range of his interests is shown by the titles of his other publications, Bombay in the Days of George IV (1907), The Latin Names of Common Flowers (1927), and Life of Edward Jenner (1931). [The scarce enlarged edition.] {Edward Anthony Jenner, 1749 - 1823 was an English scientist who studied his natural surroundings in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Jenner is widely credited as the pioneer of smallpox vaccine, and is sometimes referred to as the "Father of Immunology"; his works have been said to have "saved more lives than the work of any other man". Ronald Hopkins states: "Jenner's unique contribution was not that he inoculated a few persons with cowpox, but that he then proved they were immune to smallpox. Moreover, he demonstrated that the protective cowpox could be effectively inoculated from person to person, not just directly from cattle. In addition he tested his theory on a series of 23 subjects. This aspect of his research method increased the validity of his evidence. In 1803 in London he became involved with the Jennerian Institution, a society concerned with promoting vaccination to eradicate smallpox. In 1808, with government aid, this society became the National Vaccine Establishment. Jenner became a member of the Medical and Chirurgical Society on its foundation in 1805, and subsequently presented to them a number of papers. This is now the Royal Society of Medicine. In 1806, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Returning to London in 1811 he observed a significant number of cases of smallpox after vaccination occurring. He found that in these cases the severity of the illness was notably diminished by the previous vaccination. In 1821 he was appointed Physician Extraordinary to King George IV, a considerable national honour, and was made Mayor of Berkeley and Justice of the Peace. He continued his interests in natural history. In 1823, the last year of his life, he presented his Observations on the Migration of Birds to the Royal Society. Jenner was found in a state of apoplexy on 25 January 1823, with his right side paralysed. He never fully recovered, and eventually died of an apparent stroke (he had suffered a previous stroke) on 26 January 1823, aged 73. He was survived by one son and one daughter, his elder son having died of tuberculosis at the age of 21.}.…

Second Edition. The second edition - revised and enlarged - contains a letter kindly sent to the Author by the Revd. W. E. Layton. It was written by a friend of Linnaeus to Mr. Layton's ancestor, Philip Miller, the well-known curator of the Garden. The letter shews that it was, without doubt, the Apothecaries' Garden which brought Linnaeus to England. Many additions have also been made to the chapter describing the trees. But it must not be thought that there are trees now in the Garden which cannot be found elsewhere, for Kew Gardens have supplied London Parks with trees of many kinds - Battersea Park, in 1856, receiving no less than five thousand, with the present happy result. This new edition also contains further notes on Linnaeus, and on his two pupils, Kalm and Fabricius. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown endpaper has left phantom toning on opposite free endpaper. A little toning on back endpapers and four small check marks on back pastedown. Spine somewhat faded. Top corner bumped. otherwise a clean, tight, very good plus copy. Small 8vo. 7-3/4" x 5-5/16. Purple cloth stamped in gold. 136 pp.…
