Cette édition est traduite de l'anglais sur la troisième édition de Friedrich ACCUM, publiée et augmentée par Friedrich Albert WINSOR. Ouvrage orné d'un FRONTISPICE dépliant et de HUIT PLANCHES gravées, dont sept dépliantes. Ce TRAITÉ est UN DES OUVRAGES MAJEURS de Friedrich ACCUM, qui s'est attaché, sa carrière durant, à donner des débouchés concrets et pratiques aux progrès de la science, à l'époque où la révolution industrielle connaissait ses premiers développements. Accum s'impliqua dans le domaine du gaz d'éclairage, influencé dans ce sens par Frederick Albert WINSOR (1763-1830) qui avait promu la fondation d'une entreprise visant à introduire l'éclairage au gaz à Londres. Sur la demande de la "Gas Light and Coke Company", Accum entreprit de nombreuses expériences sur le sujet et, en 1812, il devint membre du conseil d'administration de l'entreprise. L'utilisation du gaz d'éclairage pour l'éclairage public ou dans la sphère privée passa notamment par la création de la première grande usine de production de gaz dont il fut l'un des concepteurs.
