The book covers the life, and primarily the miliary campaigns of Thomas Fairfax, the 3rd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1612-1671), a peer who fought in the English Civil War on the side of the Parliamentarians. There are seven maps of the military campaigns, and five illustrations from woodcuts embedded in the text. Markham was also the author of The History of the Abyssynian Expedition. Hardcover. The uncommon first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham (1841-1918) was a British explorer, author, and officer in the Royal Navy. He was appointed second-in-command of HMS Alert under Captain Nares for the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-6. He is also remembered for designing the flag of New Zealand. This biography, written by M. E. and F. A. Markham, was based on his journal and log-books, letters, and recollections from his cousin Mrs Clements. It relates his interesting voyages and naval career, as well as his early life and later marriage. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very bright and smart.
