With two f…loor plans of the exhibition venue and hundreds of facsimile reproductions of some of the principal works shown in the form of drawings executed by the artists themselves. The catalogue itself is followed by a series of articles from (mostly) French booksellers or publishers (e.g., Firmin Didot, Quantin, Morel, Maison Krieger), plus one by the artist Jules Chéret, commenting on the art and literary scene in 1881. With the tiny stamp of the Paris bookseller Gaetan Ronner on verso of ffep. A very good copy overall: cover edges a bit rubbed; tiny chip at top of title page; two leaves a bit damaged; short closed tear to another leaf.

The front cover contains large pasted down illustration which also states the title, author and publisher. This is a rather unique copy as it is on…ly one section of the title "Illustrated Biographies of Modern Artists" which was published in 1882. This section covers the artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema with text pages starting at 73 and ending at 96. Also within the book are numerous lithographs with their associated protective sheets. The sheets are all detached as our some of the illustrations and text pages. Separate lithographs include a portrait of the author; etched by P. Rajon, Childish Affections; painted by Alma-Tadema and etched by C. O. Murray, The Death of the First-Born: painted by Alma-Tadema and etched by A. Mongin, Studies of Roman Headdresses (no cover sheet) as well as numerous illustrations on pages with text. The lithographs or on heavy bond paper and have the plate impressions still present you can feel the raised ink as well. The worst out of all the illustrations is the Childish Affections which has a chunk missing out of the upper left corner and a small tear just over 1 inch along the upper right edge. Toning and foxing spots are also present. The exterior cardboard material shows several large stains inside and out in the upper inside corner of the interior pages shows wear/damage (unclear if this is just frayed or from a critter). There is also some rectangular marks, presumably from paper notes that were once stored inside the book, although these are no longer present. Please note: although sections of pages are still attached to the binding, many are also detached. All the pages from 73-96 are present and have been verified through the Internet Archive scan of this book. This publication was supposedly printed in 1882 but one of the heavier lithographs, The Death of the First Born has notes along the top which stated it was published in London on July 18, 1883 by the British & Foreign Artists Association. This etching also has the oval stamp in the bottom right corner. Total contents is approximately 23 pages, not including lithographs/etchings and cover sheets. There is no title page as this is just one section of the entire modern artists series. This is a very uncommon portfolio format and we have found no reference to this style of publication of this title that singles out just one particular artist and contains actual 19th-century actual pressed lithographs. The only handwriting found in the book is on the back of the first page which has A4G6 penciled along the top edge. This book contains four actual lithographs, separate from all of the illustrations on the text pages. The last litho of Roman Headdresses did not appear to have plate impressions, so it may just be a print. Lawrence Alma-Tadema (illustrator).
