Contemporary polished calf, double-ruled in gilt, gilt-tooled spine with raised bands and morocco lettering piece; marbled endleaves; silk ribbon marker. Light rubbing at joints and extremities, text lightly toned, occasional mild foxing. A very good, clean copy, handsomely bound, with a finely executed portrait of the author. First edition of Jean le Clerc's (1657-1736) autobiography. The theologian, critic, biblical scholar, and celebrated man of letters parted with Calvin over his theological interpretations, left Geneva, and settled in the Netherlands. Le Clerc was an outstanding promoter of historico-critical methods of biblical exegesis, and was a primary conduit of scholarly communication between England and the Netherlands, especially through his various journalistic endeavors. With a selection of letters by Joannes Georgius Graevius (6) and Ezechiel Spanheim (5), followed by a bibliography of le Clerc's opera. An English version appeared at London in 1712. Brunet 30867.

Loss of leather along the spine head/tail edges. Boards have significant age toning along the front head edge with chipping to leather, stains, rubbing wear, and cracking to joints. Significant bumping to corners, resulting in exposed board. Textblock has a tear along the tail hinge corner of the front pastedown, and worming along the end papers. Front free end page has an open tear, residual of a label, and pen inscription. Library stamps on the half-title and title page. Significant age toning, offsetting, and foxing throughout, a tear along the tail fore corner of page 193, not impacting text. Text in Greek and Latin. Shelved in Room A. VD17 23:296885A. 1396587. Very little spotting to pages. Overall, a very sound copy with clean internals and wide margins. Dibdin: 'This excellent edition, emphatically called 'Editio optima,' contains for the first time, some new Scholia on the 'Lysistrata;' some notes of Isaac Casaubon on the 'Equites;' and of Spanheim and Bentley on a few other plays. [. . .] The animadversions and commentaries of many learned men adorn this edition, . . . .' (p. 299-300). Dibdin also seems to be quite taken with the life and work of Kuster.

Boards have slight yellowing, small brown dots to front board, and minor cracking to head of front joint. Extremities have slight discoloration from wear, and mild bumping to corners, in some cases exposing the board. Contains 1 of 4 ties intact. Textblock has slight separation and closed tears along the pastedowns, splitting along the gutter between the second front free end page and titlepage, age toning and foxing ranges from mild to moderate plus, and speckling to edges.
