All in good condition, though on somewhat discoloured paper. Two items docketed in pencil and two bearing the Society's stamp. ITEM ONE: He hopes to be present at Dr. Max Horn's lecture, and wants to know whether the Society is 'publishing the lecture by Mr. Wilson Fox on Imperial Resources'. He thinks he should join the Society, 'if not now soon after the war', and asks to be sent the conditions of membership. ITEM TWO: Acknowledges receipt of the Society's journal containing Fox's paper and copy of the Society's prospectus. ITEM THREE: He is disappointed as he 'particularly wished to be present' at the lecture, but will not be able to get back from Winchester in time. Asks for copy of paper. ITEM FOUR: 'I enclose herewith corrected proof of the few remarks I made at the meeting of the Society of Arts.' (not present) All four items signed 'John H Harris'.

In reviewing this book, The New York Times found this work: ".a grim and disheartening spectacle that Mr. Thomas stages." From the book: ".it is the banks, big and little, with the big banks, of course, in the lead, which have declared a virtual strike of capital in the United States." Norman Thomas (1884-1968) was an American Presbyterian minister, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America between 1928 and 1948. A Princeton and Union Theological Seminary graduate, Thomas became a prominent advocate for civil liberties, labor rights, and social justice, and he opposed U.S. entry into both World Wars. He succeeded Eugene V. Debs as the leading figure of American socialism in the early 20th century, gaining national recognition for his eloquence and moral stance. Signed.

African-American close-harmony group fronts cautionary tale of women and booze, in this visually unavoidable poster for 1955 re-release of 1950 exploitation flick One Too Many, also distributed as Killer With a Label, and the rather more straight-up The Important Story of Alcoholism. The juxtaposition of "oletime bar room harmony" and alcoholism, dynamic chevron banners and martini glasses, the verbal play on "mixed drinks" and "mixed-up women", makes for an intoxicating concoction. The film is summarised by IMDb thus, "a once-famous concert pianist has had her career ruined by her alcoholism. Her husband and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous try to help her recover". It starred Ruth Warrick, who had appeared as Orson Welles's bride in Citizen Kane (1941) and later featured in the long-running US TV soap All My Children. The vocal group fronting this tawdry offering were The Harmonaires, who supplied musical fillers. They are described by Columbus African-American Collection as having been "formed in a janitor closet at the Curtiss-Wright [aeronautical] plant in 1941. [they then] embarked upon a USO tour, travelling by special car from Columbus to Washington DC in December, 1944. They performed at a number of hospitals, including Walter Reed, and sang with Buddy Rich and the US Navy Band. During the late 40s, The Harmonaires could be heard coast-to-coast on WLW every Sunday on the Circle Arrow Show, sponsored by Western Auto, and every Thursday on the Sunnyside Review and were guests on the Fred Allen, Ed Sullivan, and Henry Morgan radio shows out of New York City, and, ultimately, featured roles in the movie, One Too Many with Ruth Warwick. The Harmonaires remained active throughout the 50s, 60s, and into the 70s" (retrieved 13 December 2019). This production bolted out of the stable of writer-producer Howard W. "Kroger" Babb (1906-1980), who billed himself as "America's Fearless Young Showman", one of the key figures in the exploitation genre. After a brief spell as a sports writer Babb began his movie career in 1934 as the advertising and publicity director for the Chakeres-Warners theatre chain. "He eventually hooked up with two roadshowmen, Howard Russell Cox and Howard Underwood, who were promoting a program titled Dust to Dust in the early 1940s. Dust to Dust was nothing more than a birth reel slapped into [Bryan] Foy's High School Girl, with Cox lecturing on the 'Evils of Sex Intolerance.' The three Howards made Dust to Dust a small-town hit throughout the Mid-west. while travelling with Dust to Dust Babb hit on the idea of making his own hygiene epic" (Schaefer, pp. 198-99). This was to be Mom and Dad (1945), which became perhaps the most successful "sex hygiene" films in that sub-sub-genre. Babb was also a master of publicity and marketing hokum, deploying "adults-only showings, audiences segregated by gender, nurses in attendance, and book sales" (ibid., 132). Eric Schaefer, "Bold! Substantial archive of material belonging to noted sexploitation director and producer Don Schain. Included in the archive are 16 draft scripts for produced and unproduced films, approximately 80 color and black-and-white photographs of Schain with his wife Cheri Caffaro and other cast and crew members on the set, and an abundance of production material, including legal correspondence and agreements, fan mail for Caffaro, and production reports. All told, approximately three linear feet of material. Don Schain worked as a producer and director for nearly five decades, with a career spanning from sexploitation and softcore to Disney Channel television movies. Schain made his directorial debut in 1970 with "The Love Object," followed by the successful 1971 sexploitation film "Ginger," starring his then-wife Cheri Caffaro as the titular crime-fighting private detective. Caffaro starred in two "Ginger" sequels, "The Abductors" (1972) and "Girls Are For Loving" (1973), as well as the Schain films "Savage Sisters" (1974) and "She's Too Hot to Handle" (1977). Schain produced only one non-sexploitation film during this time: "A Place Called Today" (1972), an ambitious, antiestablishment thriller about an African American mayoral candidate. Schain would go on to become a producer of television movies, most prominently for the Disney Channel, including the Emmy Award-winning breakaway hit "High School Musical" (2006). The archive includes scripts for the following films: "A Place Called Today" (a Blaxploitation film from 1972), "Girls Are For Loving" (1972), "Track of the Moon Beast" (1976), "She's Too Hot to Handle" (1977), "The Great American Girl Robbery" (1979), and "Tom and Huck" (1995). The archive also includes scripts for a number of unproduced films, variously written by Schain, Caffaro, Steve Sommers, and others, many bearing the logo of Derio Productions, Schain's production company. Screenplays include "The Last Week of Summer," "Squaw Dance," "The Eastern Enforcer," "Pussywhipped," "The Sex Game," and "Trisha, Kristy and Jenny." Especially notable among the unproduced scripts is a draft for "The Girl Machine," a planned fourth film in the "Ginger" series, although the project evidently never came to fruition.
