(B&W photographs) From it's title, you might expect this to be a survey of the legendary Hollywood studio's first three-quarters of a century, but it's nothing of the sort; it's a little more… self-serving (not to say insidious) than that. Rather than a history of any sort, it's actually a heavily photo-illustrated catalog of the films that were then (1997) part of the Warner Bros. film library -- which is to say, NOT just the films produced by the studio itself, but the many titles that they had come to control over the years as the result of various mergers and acquisitions. Thus, in flipping through the book, you encounter numerous films that in their initial conception and creation had nothing to do with Warner Bros. at all, but came out of two other dream factories: M-G-M (NORTH BY NORTHWEST, BOYS TOWN, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, DAVID COPPERFIELD, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, etc.); and RKO (SWING TIME, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, even CITIZEN KANE, for God's sake). (And it's NOT, by the way, ALL the films in these various libraries: it's basically just the better-known "classics," or "greatest hits" if you prefer.) And it is indeed a catalog -- not a chronological survey -- with the films grouped within broad genres: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama (with sub-categories for Romance and Western), Family, Musicals/Rock, Sci-fi/Horror/Fantasy. Each film is represented by a single still (usually two or three on a page, and not very imaginatively selected) and a two-or-three-sentence description, and there are alphabetical indexes by title, director, screenwriter, and major performer (in which at least the non-WB movies are specified with a different color ink). Not produced for commercial sale, but rather for distribution within the industry -- probably just as well, because if you're a fan of Warner Bros. and their movies you'll be much better off with a copy of "The Warner Bros. This document is important not only for its specific content, but also as a benchmark for the first decade in the 21st Century of the state-of-the-art, state-of-supercomputing technology, state-of-knowledge, state-of-practice, and the state-of-professional education and development in what was then described as cybereducation. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a unit of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and provides high-performance computing resources to researchers in the United States. NCSA is one of the five original centers in the National Science Foundation's Supercomputer Centers Program. The idea for NCSA and the four other supercomputer centers arose from the frustration of its founder, Larry Smarr, who wrote an influential paper, "The Supercomputer Famine in American Universities", in 1982, after having to travel to Europe in summertime to access supercomputers and conduct his research. Smarr wrote a proposal to address the future needs of scientific research. Seven other University of Illinois professors joined as co-principal investigators, and many others provided descriptions of what could be accomplished if the proposal were accepted. Known as the Black Proposal (after the color of its cover), it was submitted to the NSF in 1983. It met the NSF's mandate and its contents immediately generated excitement. However, the NSF had no organization in place to support it, and the proposal itself did not contain a clearly defined home for its implementation. The NSF established an Office of Scientific Computing in 1984 and, with strong congressional support, it announced a national competition that would fund a set of supercomputer centers like the one described in the Black Proposal. The result was that four supercomputer centers would be chartered (Cornell, Illinois, Princeton, and San Diego), with a fifth (Pittsburgh) added later. The Black Proposal was approved in 1985 and marked the foundation of NCSA, with $42,751,000 in funding from 1 January 1985 through 31 December 1989. This was also noteworthy in that the NSF's action of approving an unsolicited proposal was unprecedented. NCSA opened its doors in January 1986. In 2007, NCSA was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to build "Blue Waters", a supercomputer capable of performing quadrillions of calculations per second, a level of performance known as petascale. presumed First Edition, First printing of this issue. He writes that he is 'directed to communicate through you, that the Chairs are not accepted and will not be paid for, but will be kept on the account and risk of Messrs. Druce & Co.', who have 'expressly treated you as agents'. He continues: 'I am also to inform you of the receipt with most perfect order of the Lamps, Shades, and all appliances - not one of the glasses or shades is broken or cracked, or injured - which, especially with reference to the condition of the Chairs shipped by the same vessel, is very remarkable - and shews the advantage of good packing and the consequences of bad - in strong contrast. The circumstance will be viewed as one of much force and effect, in the matter with Messrs. Druce & Co.' Covering sheet by Thomson Hankey & Co., reading: '44 | 26th Decr. 1855 | Exect. William Ellis ended his career as a science policy consultant for UNESCO and the World Bank in order to promote economic and scientific innovations that would reduce global inequality. He was part of a growing movement that rejected the autocratic international development tactics of wealthy countries and pivoted toward community land trusts, peer lending, and green growth. Participants from around the world wanted a way to stay in touch that steered clear of UN-style centralized bureaucracy. Ellis later wrote: "So I agreed that if people would send me their information, I would abstract it in a newsletter-directory, just saying so-and-so had built a windmill with such-and-such characteristics. I would include the name and address and contact information so that anyone could get in touch directly with the person who developed the technology for details and assistance." The Transnational Network for Appropriate / Alternative Technologies ran from 1976 to 1999, by which time online message boards and emails had rendered the printed newsletter superfluous. The subscriber to these issues was Bill Hill on behalf of the Library for Social and Technological Alternatives, the materials collection of the Berkeley-based nonprofit Village Design. These forty newsletters are a fascinating compendium of ideas, experiments, and successes from thousands of organizations working for social and environment justice.
