, Ewen, David, 1907-1985. Composers since 1900. A Biographical and Critical Guide. New York, H. W. Wilson Co., 1969, 639pp., good green-gray cloth, but ex-library with spine call number label neatly removed, a few stamps and labels inside. Ewen was born in Austria but attended high school and college in New York. From 1946-1950 he was director of Allen, Towne and Heath publishing company. In the introduction he notes that "More than half the composers have been personally interviewed. Three trips were made to Europe to gather new material from the composers themselves: to Italy, France, Switzerland, and Germany in 1964; to Austria, Hungary, France and Germany in 1965; to England, Holland, and Scandinavia in 1966. American composers were also interviewed. These meetings were supplemented by extensive correspondence. Most of the entries are at least 4-5 columns long, many longer, with a photo of the composer and contain both biographical information and an evaluation of their work, occasionally also with quotes from Ewen's communications with them.…
