Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First collected edition. Volume 2 ONLY of the first collected edition of Ewald's works, published in 1780-84 in 4 volumes. 408 pages. Original binding, chipped along right edge of spine, marbled boards show wear. Leather label is present, with chip at edge. It features Rolf Krage, "the first original Danish tragedy", illustrated with 5 original etchings by D. Chodowiecki, the famous Polish engraver. They are dated 1781. This 2nd volume, contains Rolf Krage (1770), his translation from the German of the lyrical drama "Philemon og Baucis" (1772). And an essay "Philets Forslag om pebersvendene, som vist vil blive iv?rksat" [Philets Suggestions for the female wives] complete as originally published in 1771. An assortment of lyrical works in the final section, includes his Cantata On the death of Frederick V (for choral presentation). Ewald first appeared prominently as a poet when he published in 1766 three Elegies over the dead king, which were received with universal acclamation. But perhaps his greatest claim is the fact that he was the first person to call the attention of the Scandinavian peoples to the treasuries of their ancient history and mythology, and to suggest the use of these in imaginative writing.
