Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. CONGREVE, William. EWALD, Alex. Charles (Ed.). William Congreve: The Best Plays of the Old Dramatists. London: Vizetelly & Co., 1887. True First Edition / First Printing. Hardcover. The scarce, original unexpurgated landmark volume from the inaugural year of Henry Vizetelly's iconic Mermaid Series. Includes Congreve's masterpiece Restoration comedies and tragedies: The Way of the World, Love for Love, The Mourning Bride, and The Old Bachelor, complete with an analytical biography and notes by Ewald. • Imprint Verification: Crucially features the original "Vizetelly & Co." imprint stamped at the foot of the spine (faded), confirming true 1887 first edition sheets. • Publisher Monogram: The rear board features the distinctive, original entwined "V & Co" (Vizetelly & Co.) publisher's crest stamped into the cloth. • Binding & Cloth: Original publisher's patterned cloth featuring the Mermaid Series emblem. Boards show typical moderate rubbing, uniform spine fading, bumping to corners, and light fraying to the cloth spine ends. The structural binding is a little shaken but remains firm, a little splitting to paper at internal hinges. • Interior: 486 pages. Abrasion to ffep, a small part of the green top layer has been pulled off leaving the white beneath. Pages remain structurally good. No inscriptions, minor marks. • Foxing: Noticeable foxing/age-spotting heavily concentrated on the portrait frontispiece and the protective tissue guard. Uniform light foxing present along the outer text block edges. • Overall: Good (G) copy of a highly sought-after 19th-century publishing artefact. Explicitly priced to reflect external cosmetic wear. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand.…
