Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Quartos, 1172 pages, publisher's khaki cloth, hinges weakened in vol. 1 of this weighty volume Voliume 1 covers the physical survey and biology, volume 2 covers the biological survey, and ends with a bibliography of 90+ papers and articles related to the Lake after 1879, and an Index. Vol. 1 has a large folding map of the lake ( an inch tear where it attaches to the rear endpaper). With 35 colored plates, 8 halftones, 24 text figures. This is the first study of its kind. In 1889 it was " decided to select a small lake and make such a study of it as might serve as a model for the investigation of all similar lakes. .Lake Maxinkuckee, in northern Indiana, was believed to meet all these conditions. It was assumed to be typical of the class of small glacial lakes. . In short, Lake Maxinkuckee was utilized as a biological station where scores of interesting problems were studied and where many more problems can be studied more effectively than at any other lake with which the writers are acquainted." - Introduction.

Indianapolis, IN, Department of Conservation, State of Indiana, 1920. Two volumes in two. 4to. 1172 pp.; 36 plates of which 27 coloured, depicting fishes. One folding map. Original uniform grey cloth with gilt title on the spines. = Deals mainly with fishes and fishing, physical features, biology such as birds and reptiles of this North American Lake. With a peculiar double provenance: first volume with on the front free endpaper recto "to Prof Edwin Chapin Starks with compliments of his friend Barton Warren Evermann December 25, 1920"; and second volume with loosely inserted a rectangular paper slip, "To Dr. Charles Upson Clark with the compliments of H. Walton Clark XII-15-1920". This is a fairly common set, although rarer outside the U.S.A., but few copies are signed, let alone double signed in both author's handwriting.
