8vo, pp. 16; very poorly printed on cheap paper; in recent boards. A pirated edition of a famous satire, being an attack on the Deist scholar and cleric Matthew Tindal. The Oxford imprint may well be false, and could be inspired by the fact that the poem is set in Oxford, with the Devil visiting Tindal in his rooms at All Souls. This reprint was sold for a penny; the title-page rather resembles that of the first edition, but the poem itself is reproduced in much smaller type. Foxon E522; Madan 133. Both ESTC and Foxon record five copies only (two at the BL, two at the Bodleian, and at Newberry), and some of those have a misprint in the title, reading 'Appartion', which was corrected in the press the correct reading is seen in this copy. One of the Bodleian copies is reproduced on Google Books: that shows the uncorrected title page, but the poem itself is severely cropped.…

Foxon notes an advertisement for this edition dated June 29, but an inscription on the title-page of this copy, by a man at the Middle Temple, which is dated '1709/10', reveals that it must have been on sale no later than March. 8vo, pp. 38; disbound. First edition: the author's first poem. Abel Evans (1679-1737) was educated at Oxford and became a low-church clergyman. In time, however, he found it expedient to change sides, and ally himself with the high-church Tory party, and it was in this guise that he composed this attack on the deist Matthew Tindal, whose Rights of the Christian Church Asserted had first appeared in 1706. The poem was published in the feverish atmosphere attending the early days of the Sacheverell controversy. Composed in heroic couplets, the poem takes the form of a dialogue between Tindal and Satan; the Devil, disguised as a college bedmaker, visits Tindal in his rooms at All Souls and conspires with him to overthrow the Church. The names of people and places are thinly disguised, often by reversing first and last letters, so that Tindal becomes 'L----t', and Oxford is respresented as 'D----o'. The poem attracted a good deal of attention, and was several times pirated. Evans later became a good friend and admirer of Pope, who speaks of him favorably in the Dunciad. 8vo, engraved frontispiece and pp. 33; disbound. First edition: an appealing horticultural epistle in verse. This panegyric to Jacob Bobart the younger, and the Oxford garden founded by his father, begins with some wry reflections on the aftermath of the Treaty of Utrecht: Thank heav'n! at Last our Wars are o'er; We're very Wise, and very Poor: All our Campaigns at once are done; We've Ended, where we just Begun, In Perfect PEACE: Long may it last! And Pay for all the Taxes past (p. 3). Evans goes on to combine his description of the 'physick-garden' with a tribute to Queen Anne. Of particular interest is the fine engraved frontispiece, showing Bobart standing in front of the garden's gateway, which had been designed by Inigo Jones.
