Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Second Impression. 1968. Second impression of the first English translation (the work was first published in L'Annee Sociologique, in France, 1898). ix, 165pp. Marcel Mauss was the nephew and most distinguished pupil of Émile Durkheim, whose review L'Année sociologique he helped to found and edit. Henri Hubert was another member of the group of sociologists who developed under the influence of Durkheim. The subject of the present book is at the center of the comparative study of religion. The authors describe a basic sacrifice drawn from Indian sources and show what is fundamental and constant, comparing Indian and Hebrew practices in particular, then Greek and Roman, then additional practices from many eras and cultures. The essay emphasizes the variety within sacrificial practice and the potential incompatibility of sacrifice and totemism. It proposes an origin for sacrifice of a god (as in Christianity) rather than to gods, and having defined sacrifice as effecting communication between the sacred and profane, explores its function. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with copper titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a large part of the top corner of the front free endpaper cut off (presumably to remove an inscription). The dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded with light bumping to the top of the spine. The front flap has not been price clipped but there is a stain around the bottom corner and traces on an old sticker that had been placed over the printed price.…
