Evan Lloyd (1734-76) came from Denbighshire, and was educated at Jesus College Oxford. He was ordained, and was given a benefice and employed his own curate there, but seldom v…isited the parish, which makes it slightly odd that this poem is an eloquent account of the miserable lot of curates: 'Mong all the wretches found on Proxy's list, That crawl 'twixt heav'n and earth, and scarce subsist; 'Mong all the lots to which the poor is heir, The hardest portion is the Curate's share. (p. 11) And he is savagely critical of the upper reaches of the church, not just the Bishops, but those who support the whole structure of excessive rewards for the higher clergy, whilst neglecting their duties and the lower classes: 'Let Hell burn those, whom Faith makes but lukewarm' (p 23). He finishes by praising the 'honest Curates', who do the work without complaint, and advises them: 'Sigh not for Mitres, they're not worth your care' (p. 47). Lloyd later came to be a good friend of David Garrick, whom he praised in a later poem, but Garrick's support could not earn him further advancement in the church: as the Bishop of St Asaph said, he had to 'perform quarantine' for the virulence of his satires. All copies, like this one, seem to be signed by Lloyd on the title page after the word 'By'.
