Flavius Philostratus 'the Athenian' (ca. AD 170-05) was a Greek sophist who studed at Athens and later lived in Rome. He was author of the admirable Life of Apollonius of Tyanna and Lives of the Sophists. The Greek sophist and historian Eunapius was born at Sardis in AD 347, but went to Athens to study and lived much of his life there, teaching rhetoric and possibly medicine. He was initiated into the mysteries and was hostile to Christians. His Lives of Philosophers and Sophists (mainly contemporary with himself) is our only source for knowledge of Neo-Platonism in the later part of the fourth century.

His subjects included Plotinus, Porphyry, Iamblichus, and Epiphanius, 'of whom Eunapius gives an idealized picture in order to compete with the biographies of Christian saints' (OCD), and he includes one female philosopher, Sosipatra. The Latin translation by Hadrianus Junius first appeared alongside the editio princeps of the Greek (Plantin, 1568), though the source text supplied to Junius by Joannes Sambucus was defective. The Lives were extensively corrected by Commelin in 1596, partly using a manuscript in Heidelberg (now Vat. Pal. gr. 209), and for this edition an extract about embassies from Eunapius' now fragmentary History has been appended. The present edition was issued contemporaneously by Paul Estienne, Jean Vignon, Samuel Crespin, Jacques Stoer and the Chouëts, each under their own imprint, sometimes alongside an edition of Diogenes. As often, this book was given the imprint Cologny ('Coloniae Allobrogum') instead of (Protestant) Geneva, though some copies do indeed contain 'Genevae' on the title. USTC 1945793. Language: Greek.

An admirer of emperor Julian and a staunch opponent of Christianity, Eunapius of Sardis (c. 345-c. 420) here writes of many obscure neoplatonists in the East. He "gives an idealized picture in order to compete with the biographies of Christian saints" (Oxford Classical Dictionary, ed. 2012). Helping to fill a lacuna in late antique history, De Vitis Philosophorum et Sophistarum "is valuable as the only source for the history of the neo-Platonism of that period" (EB 13th - 9: 890). A wonderfully tangential detail is found in Junius' acrostic encomium to Queen Elizabeth I. The English edition of 1579 (apparently translated at Junius' request) is also dedicated to Elizabeth.
