The racist children's classic is set in India, and even the earliest versions of the book contained illustrations that clearly drew upon negative colonial stereotypes. Langston Hughes noted that Little Black Sambo was a work of the "pickaninny variety.amusing undoubtedly to the white child, but like an unkind word to one who has known too many hurts to enjoy the additional pain of being laughed at". Despite revisions, the work demonstrates racial stereotypes and slurs. [83764].
