Moss green cloth boards with white pictorial titles front and spine; rough cut edges, top edge gilt; gold reading ribbon. Endpapers illustrated with scenes from E.A. Rodd's 'Saramouches' stories with front endpapers depicting 'Scaramouches - good'; the back endpapers depicts 'Scaramouches - naughty'. Eight charming full color plates (protected by preceding blank papers) and several additional black and white illustrations by Ethel Everett. Boards and binding in fine to near fine condition. Text block and plates in fine condition without marks and tears except for front free endpaper which has a Christmas postage stamp dated 1961 with a previous owners name and address in juvenile script. Aunt Judy's Magazine was a British magazine for young people founded in 1866 by Margaret Gatty. After her death in 1873, publishing was continued by her daughter Julian Horatia Eden until 1885. The magazine is named after Gatty¿s daughter's childhood nickname, ¿Judy". The selection in this volume was reprinted in the chronological order in which they were first appeared in the magazine. 'The Water-Babies' is a children's novel by Charles Kingsley originally written as a serial for Macmillan Magazine between 1862-1863. It was first published in its entirety in 1863. The novel follows Tom, a young chimney sweep who falls into the river and is transformed into a water-baby. Written as a satire in support of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species.Kingsley writes 'The Water-Babies' as a didactic moral fable. The novel expresses many of the common prejudices of the time including religion, racial tension, and diversity. Though it has largely fallen out of favor within the canon of Children's literature when published the Water-Babies was an immediate success. Illustrated with twenty-four colour plates by Ethel F. Everett. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth. Externally very smart. Fading to the spine. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound.
