In den Warenkorb2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Addressed to 'E Gambart Esq' and endorsed by the recipient. Two years earlier Gambart had published 'Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood', illustrated with 34 plates by the Junior Etching Club (of which Whistler was a member between 1857 and 1862). The book had been well-received, but the letter makes clear that it had not covered its costs. It begins: 'My dear Sir | (Junior Etching Club) | At the meeting of this Club, on Wednesday last, I submitted to them your suggestion as to the sale of the remaining copies of the "Hood's Poems", with the plates. | The Club think it most desirable to dispose of the books still on hand, so as to cover the amount of the balance still due to you. But they decidedly object to the plates being included in the sale.' He asks him to effect for the Club 'the arrangement of the affair in that manner', and asks him to deal with him directly, 'the Club having empowered me to settle the matter with you on the best terms possible'.

Edition Unstated. Good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth with bevelled boards. All edges gilt. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat dulled and rubbed as with age. Some of the spine lacking. Hinges starting. Light foxing scattered throughout. Remains well-preserved overall. Notes; "The illustrations in this Volume are copied, with permission, from a series of Etchings published some years since by the 'Etching Club.' Only a few impressions of that work were printed, the copper-plates were destroyed, and the book, except in a very expensive form, has long been unattainable. Great care has been taken to render the present Wood-blocks as like the original Etchings as the different methods of engraving will allow." Subjects; 1701-1800. 1700-1799. 1701-1800. In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. The Etching Club (illustrator). A wonderfully illustrated copy of Oliver Goldsmith's popular pastoral poem, with historically accurate engravings by the 'Etching Club'. An 1859 reprint of 'The Deserted Village', a politically charged pastoral poem by 18th century novelist Oliver Goldsmith. Originally published in 1770, this poem was intended as a social critique of rural depopulation, the privatisation of land, and excessive wealth. 'The Deserted Village' had an enormously positive reception during the Victorian era, and was even adapted into an opera of the same name. Beautifully illustrated by the Etching Club, with 35 wooden engravings accompanying the heroic couplets. These engravings were drawn on wood from the original etchings by E.K. Johnson, while the engravings were made by Horace Harral, Thomas Bolton, and James Cooper. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. The boards are rubbed slightly which has resulted in some slight discolouration and fading. Some wear to the head and tail of spine, and to the extremities. Bookseller's label on rear paste down. Some faint spotting on pastedowns and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. The tissue guards between pages vi and page 7, and pages 42 and page 43, are working loose. Pages are bright and clean with a few scattered spots. Very Good. book.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Etching Club's edition of Goldsmith's Deserted Village was a huge production. This copy consists of all 40 plates, plus title page and 2 versions of the dedication page (one with etching beneath dedication and one without). No binding. Each page is loose & each page is matted in a stiff, hinged, mat. The pages are not affixed to the board, but are preserved flat and unbound. Each sheet is a whopping 13.5 x 18.5 inches. The printed area (block impression clearly visible) is 6.5 x 11 inches. Each plate has 2-3 etchings. Beneath each one, a line or two of Goldsmith's text is neatly written in cursive. It appears to be written in pencil, not printed from the etching plate or printed afterwards on a press. Records of other copies of the 1841 edition show printed captions beneath the illustrations -- This appears to be an unbound, untrimmed Proof Set of the plates. There are 2 copies of the dedication page - one printed in blue, brown and black, with an etching below; the other printed only in brown and black, with no etching. Title page dated 1841. There is some foxing to the pages. The mat-boards are hinged, slightly larger than the pages, with rectangular windows cut out for the images. Each has a code written in pencil at the bottom left corner (the mat board, not the plates themselves). The codes are not obvious to me "B3092-1" "B3092-40 p 190. 19.20.21.22" etc. The Etching Club included many of the great artists of the era, including C.W. Cope, Richard Redgrave, Henry Townsend, Thomas Creswick and others, whose work is included here. Please email with questions or to request photos. Extra shipping will be required. A wonderful and unique item.
