Expected toning in the endpage gutters almost ubiquitous in books printed in the 30's. Just trace shelf evidence to jacket edges, short closed tear to crown of spine panel and mild dulling at spine. I re-backed, with the original back-strips laid down). On the spine, five panels. Author and title gilt to the second panel, number gilt to the fourth. All edges of the text-block speckled brown. Vol. I re-backed, with the original back-strips laid down (end-papers renewed); vol. II strengthened at the head and tail (end-papers renewed). The hinges of vol. II splitting, with some peeling of the calf and craquelure along the spine. Tanned, with passages of foxing and offsetting at the plates. Tanning to the lower fore-corner of vol. II 3A1-3B1 including two plates. A graphite marginalium to p. 222 of vol. I, and a graphite circle to the title-page of vol. II. John Gabriel Stedman (1744-1797) was born to a Scotsman in the Austrian Netherlands, and followed his father into military service in the Dutch States Army. In 1772 he was dispatched to Surinam (Suriname in Dutch; formerly Dutch Guiana) immediately north of Brazil in the face of a long-simmering conflict between the Dutch colonists and "maroons" (from the Spanish "cimmarón," wild), self-liberated enslaved Africans who built communities throughout the Caribbean. Stedman served several tours 1773-1777 and kept a journal that provided the basis for the Narrative, first published 1796, as well as sketchbooks translated into engraving by William Blake, Francesco Bartolozzi, John Barlow and others (under the auspices of the radical liberal publisher Joseph Johnson). Stedman's interest is broad, including history and natural history, and the Narrative is one of the early Anglophone accounts of a place long celebrated for its biodiversity, stretching back to Maria Sibylla Merian, who published her dissertation on the metamorphosis of Surinamese insects based on a research expedition 1699-1701. Although the text shows Stedman defending the enslavement of Africans, his frank accounts of their brutal treatment provided the basis for the illustrations and the use of the book by abolitionists keen to see slavery stopped. Octavo in 4s (9 13/16", 6 5/16", 249mm x 161mm). [Full collation available.] With 50 (of 140; lacking those to voll. I and III) hand-colored stipple-engraved plates in toto. Bound in contemporary checked tree-calf. On the spine, 5 raised bands. Author gilt to red calf in the second panel, number gilt to green calf in the fourth. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block glazed yellow. Worn at the extremities, with losses to the head- and tail-pieces. Foxed throughout, sometimes heavily, and damp-stained in passages. Peripheral tanning throughout. Lacking 90 plates (those to voll. I and III). François André Michaux (1770-1855) accompanied his father André, botaniste royale to Louis XVI, to America in 1785. Together they explored the eastern part of the continent from Florida to Hudson's Bay, going as far west as the Mississippi. François returned to France in 1790 to study medicine, and despite his royal association made it through the Revolution. Eventually he was sent by the State to America once again, with a view to finding species suitable for introduction to the European climate. Following this tour he commenced the present work, his magnum opus. It far surpassed the previous treatments of American trees, and employed the luminaries of botanical illustration (the Redouté brothers, Bessa and Riché) for the production of the plates. Stipple-engraved à la poupée, the plates were inked with several colors applied with small cotton pads (shaped like a doll or "poupée" in French) for each impression. The process is intensively laborious and proved too expensive to continue for long into the XIXc. Catharine Yeates (1783-1866) was a wealthy heiress in Lancaster, PA, who built on her father's property holdings and became a grandee of the city. Her interest in the set doubtless lay in its information and illustration of the trees that grew on her estate -- to say nothing of the local pride in its author as a member of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, just sixty miles east. Her calligraphic signature to each volume is a proud statement of erudition and wealth. Yeates doubtless left the set to her sister Elizabeth (1778-1867), who married Redmond Conyngham (1781-1846). The bookplate may be that of the late Conyngham's (used by his wife) or that of their son Redmond (1816-1874). The Conyngham (a variant of Cunningham) family of Lancaster hailed from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal in Ireland, and had been prominent in Pennsylvania commerce government since the 1740's. Considerably after the ownership by these two distinguished Pennsylvania families, the book came into the collection of Louis St. Lewis (1961-2021), a North Carolina-born queer pop artist admired by Andy Warhol. His work was principally assemblages (collage); could the remaining plate volumes have been cut up and used for his work (as he did with Audubon's birds)?
