" Il s'agit d'un ensemble de trois volumes , deux volumes de catalogue et un volume de table alphabétique, dont la parution tardive (20 ans après le catalogue) est surprenante : il est possible qu'une telle collection ait mis longtemps à se vendre. Il faut également remarquer que rien ne semble indiquer qu'il s'agit d'un catalogue de vente, sinon la mention "feu le duc d'Estrées". Toutefois Bléchet le considère comme tel. Bléchet et Péligry signalent l'existence d'un vol. de tables des estampes et des cartes présent dans l'ex. de la Bibliothèque Se Geneviève. Tous les thèmes sont bien sûr représentés dans un tel nombre de livres. On peut dénombrer 2904 ouvrages de théologie (dont 73 Bibles entières et 96 extraits de la Bible), 1247 de jurisprudence, 5120 de sciences et arts (dont 170 pour les arts militaires, ce qui n'est pas une proportion très importante), 2957 pour les belles-lettres. C'est encore l'histoire - et la géographie - qui occupe la part la plus importante : 7818 ouvrages sur 200047, soit près de 40% des livres." Vainqueur du duc de Cumberland à la bataille d'Hastembeck, le maréchal d'Estrées dut cependant céder son commandement au duc de Richelieu que des intrigues de cour avaient fait nommer à sa place.
