Toute l'histoire d'Auffay repose à la fois sur son prieuré et sur sa baronnie. Le vicomte d'Estaintot retrace la chronologie des événements qui ont marqué leur évolution et dresse le portrait de ceux qui leur sont intimement liés. Gilbert d'Auffay, compagnon de Guillaume le Conquérant dans sa périlleuse expédition qui lui valut la couronne d'Angleterre, refusa les possessions considérables que le monarque voulait lui donner en récompense de son dévouement, pour revenir dans son manoir. Il fonda alors le prieuré, en 1079, quelques jours seulement avant sa mort. Habité par six moines de Saint-Evroult, celui-ci fut souvent visité par Eudes de Rigaud, archevêque de Rouen, qui eut le mérite de faire hâter la reconstruction de la nef, à la charge des paroissiens qu'il considérait alors « riches et puissants ». La baronnie eut la particularité d'être partagée, pendant plusieurs siècles, en deux portions, l'une dite de Tancarville, qui sera nommée plus tard portion royale, l'autre dite d'Asnières ; conséquence du droit féodal qui s'appliqua entre les deux filles du dernier baron d'Auffay. Parmi les différentes familles qui possédèrent le domaine, quelques figures connurent un destin hors du commun. Guillaume de Léon commandita l'assassinat de sa femme, Marie de Ferrières, dans l'abbaye de Fontaine-Guérard. Jean Dyel, alors jeune étudiant, fut le premier à se battre en duel avec le poète Vincent Voiture, dont les lettres firent l'admiration de Voltaire et de La Fontaine. Il devint ensuite premier président à la Cour des aides, puis ambassadeur à Venise. Par son mariage avec Renée le Bouthillier de Chavigny, Jean Beuselin connut une ascension sociale importante, même si son épouse considérant avec amertume cette mésalliance, s'empressait de faire la charité à tous les pauvres de Rouen, de « peur de refuser l'aumône à quelques parents de M. de Bosmelet, sans le savoir ». La dot de leur fille attira plus d'un grand seigneur. Elle épousa le duc de la Force, bénéficiant ainsi d'un titre et d'un tabouret à la cour, n'abandonnant pas pour autant son château de Bosmelet, dans le salon duquel on conserva longtemps sa chaise à porteurs.
