Hij was gekerfd in het schild van een schildpad in de Lo-rivier. De getallen brachten de omstanders in beroering, want hoe je ze o…ok optelde, ze hadden steeds dezelfde uitkomst. Sinds dit ?Lo-Shu? vierkant zijn er in allerlei beschavingen talrijke varianten van het magische vierkant gevonden. Ze werden gedragen als talisman om boze geesten af te weren en om er ziektes mee te genezen. Ook speelden ze een rol in de alchemie en recentelijk werden ze in verband gebracht met de werking van het DNA-molecuul. Maar magische vierkanten zijn minder magisch dan ze lijken. Logisch redeneren volstaat om ze te begrijpen. Wiskundige Arno van den Essen legt uit hoe magische vierkanten werken en gaat uitvoerig in op de boeiende geschiedenis ervan. Hij vertelt hoe de wiskundige Euler voorlopers van onze Sudokus gebruikte om er magische vierkanten mee te maken, en hoe Benjamin Franklin (wetenschapper en medeopsteller van de Amerikaanse onafhankelijkheidsverklaring) uit verveling magische vierkanten bedacht die zo ingewikkeld zijn dat ze wiskundigen eeuwenlang hoofdbrekens hebben gekost.
