Boards. Zustand: Good. Reprint. This essay is founded upon a diary which recorded passing events as they appeared to the diariest at the time of their happening. No attempt has been made to correct first impressions by the doubtful light of subsequent reflection. The character of Lord Kitchener, sketches of his colleagues and contemporaries, glimpses of the background before which these personages moved, were set down at the time and remain untouched. It is perhaps their only merit. Lord Kitchener asked me to go to France in September, 1914, and to remain there. His request was subsequently renewed by Mr. Asquith and the present Prime Minister. As a Sub-Cmmissioner of the British Red Cross in France, I was, furthermore, brought into contact with many phases of the War. From these opportunities the journal and correspondence sprang which form the basis of this essay. Blue boards with gilt lettering. Foxing to end pages and edges. Some fading to boards. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. An important early post-war study of Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, examining his personality, reputation and especially the political and administrative difficulties surrounding his service as Secretary of State for War during the First World War. Esher was exceptionally well placed to write on the subject, having occupied influential advisory and administrative positions close to the monarchy, government and military establishment. The book considers Kitchener's role in the creation of the wartime army, his relations with government and the tensions surrounding his final years before his death aboard HMS Hampshire in 1916. Binding nice and tight; cloth slightly spotted but bright and clean overall; pages and illustrations generally very nice and clean. Neat pencil ownership name dated 1921. Very good plus overall.
