First Edition. 33 x 33cm. Paperback, 36pp. Illustrated throughout, with striking Art Deco cover design by Bernard Essers [i.e. Ben Essers]. Introductory article on the growth of the skyscraper in modern architecture. The main theme of this issue is crystal and mineral shape studies, and contains much early macro-photography highlighting the sculptural quality of natural crystalline structures. A collaboration with geologist Prof. Berend George Escher who supplied many of the crystals and minerals from the Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie in Leiden. Stab-sewn with original black ribbon. Spine quite rubbed and abraded. Slightly curled at edges, otherwise very good condition.

Berend George Escher (4 April 1885 - 11 October 1967) was a Dutch geologist. Escher had a broad interest, but his research was mainly on crystallography, mineralogy and volcanology. He was a pioneer in experimental geology. He was a half-brother of the artist M. C. Escher, and had some influence on his work due to his knowledge of crystallography.Scarce. l "Rillensteine" (rillstones) geologisch gezien zijn het stenen met kleine, parallelle groeven (microkarren) door erosie, vaak op kalksteen.

Behoorlijk exemplaar van een zeer kwetsbaar boek. Berend George Escher (1885-1967) was hoogleraar geologie te Leiden en de oudere halfbroer van M.C. Escher, op wie hij met zijn kristallografische kennis zekere invloed had. Ingenaaide exemplaren zijn zeldzaam, zeker met het geïllustreerde stofomslag. De wiskundige Pieter van de Vliet (1902-1984, zie Wikipedia) was wethouder van Hilversum en Eerste Kamerlid; ook stelde hij enkele wiskundige schoolboeken samen met Pieter Wijdenes (1872-1972).

Unpublished, 1927. Single, oblong leaf (32.4 x 41.5 cm). Printed in colour. = This a printed map of western Java (including Batavia = Jakarta) and the (in)famous island Krakatau (Krakatoa), meant for an Atlas van Tropisch Nederland (Atlas of tropical Netherlands) that was never published. Heavily annotated in the margins, by the Dutch geologist and half-brother of the famous Dutch artist M. C. Escher, professor Berend "Beer" George Escher (1885-1967). Beer was a member of a commission overseeing maps made by and for Dutch publishers, in particular maps of the Kingdom of the Netherlands which then included the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), and Dutch West Indies (now Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, and a few smaller Caribbean Islands which are still Dutch). As noted by Beer, the map was received on 10 December 1927. In the margins, Beer noted the scale (1:7500,000) as well as several errors regarding the topography and the printing. In the lower margin is a more detailed account of the history of this map, for whom it was meant, and why it was never published. Vertical, median fold with a very short tear at its upper end; a few weak, marginal creases, otherwise very good. A unique item.
