Okart. 47 S. mit Abb., "Der in einer Schenkungsurkunde des Klosters St. Gallen 757 bezeugte Ortsname verweist auf ein alemann. Dorf, das sich wahrscheinlich auf dem Plateau südl. der ebenfalls erwähnten Kirche befand. 1178 erhob Gf. Hartmann III. von Kyburg sein Dorf zur Stadt und setzte vermutlich schon damals seine Ministerialen, die Truchsessen von D., zur Verwaltung ein, welche spätestens 1245 mit Burg und Vogtei belehnt wurden. Im Vergleich zu Schaffhausen und Stein am Rhein blieb D. ein bescheidener Marktort. Hartmann hielt die städt. Freiheit und Selbstverwaltung gering und nutzte den mit Burg, Bering und Brückenkopf bewehrten Ort v.a. zur Sicherung seiner Besitzungen beid-seits des Rheins. Nach dem Übergang der Herrschaft an die Habsburger 1264 entwickelte sich die Stadt zu einem ihrer Eckpfeiler in den Vorlanden, wobei die Truchsessen, die auf der Burg Unterhof sassen, zeitweilig Vogtei und Schultheissenamt in einer Hand vereinigten. Ab 1320 wählte die Bürgerschaft einen Kl. Rat von 8-12 Mitgliedern, im Verlauf des 15. Jh. dann einen 24-28-köpfigen Gr. Rat. Nachdem die Hzg. von Österreich 1349 die Vogtei aus der Pfandschaft der Truchsessen gelöst und an andere Ministerialengeschlechter vergabt hatten, gewann die Bürgerschaft zunehmend an Bedeutung. Der Einflussverlust der Habsburger und der Niedergang der Truchsessen liessen die Stadt 1415-42 reichsfrei werden. 1460 wurde D. im Zuge der Eroberung des Thurgaus von den Eidgenossen nach zehntägiger Belagerung eingenommen; es behielt jedoch wie Frauenfeld gewisse Privilegien in der gemeinen Herrschaft Thurgau. Diese umfassten die Hoch- und Niedergerichtsbarkeit und die kurz zuvor erworbenen Zoll-, Steuer- und Vogteirechte (mit Schloss), ab 1574 zudem die Herrschaft über die linksrhein. Besitzungen des Klosters Paradies sowie vom 16. Jh. an die meisten Niedergerichte im Gebiet des heutigen Bezirks. Gerichtsurteile wurden nicht an den Landvogt in Frauenfeld, sondern direkt an die eidg. Instanzen der neun Orte (im Gegensatz zum übrigen Thurgau mit Bern und Schaffhausen) weitergezogen; die Stadt hatte lediglich alle zwei Jahre dem thurg. It started as notes for a course which I gave intermittently at the ETH over a number of years. Following repeated suggestions, this English translation was commissioned by Springer; they were most fortunate in finding translators whose mathemati cal stature, grasp of the language and unselfish dedication to the essentially thankless task of rendering the text comprehensible in a second language, both impresses and shames me. Therefore, my thanks go to Dr. Roberto Minio, now Darmstadt and Professor Charles Thomas, Cambridge. The task of preparing a La'JEX-version of the text was extremely daunting, owing to the complexity and diversity of the symbolisms inherent in the various parts of the book. Here, my warm thanks go to Barbara Aquilino of the Mathematics Department of the ETH, who spent tedious but exacting hours in front of her Olivetti. The present book is not primarily intended to teach logic and axiomat ics as such, nor is it a complete survey of what was once called 'elementary mathematics from a higher standpoint'. Rather, its goal is to awaken a certain critical attitude in the student and to help give this attitude some solid foun dation.
