The author was the Scottish wife of the Spanish Minister to the United States, who was sent on a special mission to Mexico after Independence. "One of the classic writings of nineteenth-century travel.due to her position, [she] was able to become intimately acquainted with Mexican society and had access to any information she sought.This is probably the most important record of the social life of the country at that time" (Hill). "This is the earliest and most balanced first-hand account of Mexico to be written by a woman."
