Second, presumably pirated edition of the first independent French treatise on military architecture, first published in 1600 and a pioneering work in introducing the Italian style of fortification north of the Alps. The author Errard from Bar le Duc worked for the Duke of Lorraine and was an engineer who later on designed several citadels for Henri IV. - This copy unfortunately not complete. It would appear that the missing plates had already not been present a long time ago as old blank leaves were bound in where they should be. We have plates 2-8, 10-31 and 38-47 (missing: 1, 9 and 32-37) - price strongly reduced due to this! - Some browning, little staining, to the end little light waterstains, binding rubbed and dusty with stains, laces gone, but else still very good - price considerably reduced because of missing plates.

The first and only edition printed in the Netherlands, with a false Paris imprint and not previously recognized, of "the first independent French work on fortification" (Jähns), by Jean Errard, mathematician and official military engineer to King Henri IV. The four "livres" give a general introduction, an account of regular (symmetrical) fortifications, irregular fortifications and fortifications at the edge of a hill, mountain or sea. The emphasis is on design and geometric construction, rather than the mechanics of building. It remained the French standard work on the subject until superseded by Vauban's work beginning in the 1670s, but even Vauban shows Errard's influence very clearly. There appears to be no copy in any Dutch library.With minor and mostly marginal water stains (reaching the corner of the text in the last two quires), occasional marginal tears and an occasional crease, but still in good condition. The binding shows a few stains, and old sheepskin parchment restorations on the fore-edge, but is structurally sound as refurbished. The only Netherlands edition, in the original French, of a seminal classic of French fortification.l Berlin Kat. 3518; Cockle 802 note; Jordan 1066 (7 copies); cf. Jähns, pp. 832-833; Sloos, Warfare 8008; not in STCN. Recased in contemporary vellum, sewn on 5 vellum tapes, with a hollow back. With an engraved, integral general title page (a city gate with cannons as columns, the cannons with the arms of Austria and of France and Navarre, and Errard's arms at the foot), 3 letterpress divisional title pages, each with the same woodcut face or mask with cornucopia, 38 engraved plates (1 single-page and 37 double-page, showing fortification plans, views, etc., as well as cannons, equipment and surveying instruments), 9 engraved and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text (diagrams, fortification plans, perspective views, etc.), woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, decorated initials (3 series) and a factotum, and decorations built up from arabesque typographic ornaments.
