Early treatise on Arab horses with several early important pedigrees preserved. Upton, a Captain in the Royal Lancers, saw the superiority of Arab horses during the Crimean War and was tasked by Henry Chaplin, later President of the Board of Agriculture, to go to the British Consul in Aleppo to aid in the acquisition of Arab horses, which he did twice between 1870 and 1875.
