The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was a proposed missile defense system intended to protect the United States from attack by ballistic strategic nuclear weapons (intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles). The system, which was to combine ground-based units and orbital deployment platforms, was first publicly announced by President Ronald Reagan on March 23, 1983. The initiative focused on strategic defense rather than the prior strategic offense doctrine of mutual assured destruction (MAD). The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) was set up in 1984 within the United States Department of Defense to oversee the Strategic Defense Initiative. Reagan was a vocal critic of MAD doctrine. SDI was an important part of his defense policy intended to end MAD as a nuclear deterrence strategy, as well as a strategic initiative to neutralize the military component of the Soviet Union's nuclear defenses. SDI was nicknamed largely in the mainstream media as "Star Wars", after the popular 1977 film by George Lucas. In 1987, the American Physical Society concluded that a global shield such as "Star Wars" was extremely ambitious and with existing technology not directly feasible for operational status, and that about ten more years of research was needed to learn about such a comprehensive and complex system to set up and make it fully operational. Dr. Christien Enzing joined Technopolis BV, Amsterdam in 2009 as senior consultant. Her research and consultancy covers the whole research and innovation policy chain: from ex-ante assessment and programme design and monitoring to ex-post evaluation. She performed evaluations of European and national RTI programmes and of national research centres. She has a specific interest in the so-called 'key enabling technologies' (nanotechnology, new materials, bio-process-technology), their application in industrial sectors (agro-food, biobased economy/chemical industry/energy) and their impact on economy and society. Recent projects are the evaluation of the European Framework programmes Nanotech, New Materials and Production Technologies, Energy (Bioenergy), Research Infrastructure, Science in Society and Food Quality and Safety, of the Dutch Technopartner programme and Innovation Program Food & Nutrition and the Flemish Industrial Research Funds and Entrepreneurial Education Initaitives. She leads the evaluation work package of PACITA (FP7 project on Technology Assessment). Evaluations of research institutes include the Flemish VITO and three Czech research centres (natural sciences, advanced technologies, materials). She was head of the Secretariat of the Dutch Committee Social Dialogue Nanotechnology (2009-2011). Also she did studies on the risks of GM-algae and the economic position of Europe in the field of micro-algae (2009-2011). Before joining Technopolis, she worked at the universities of Groningen and Utrecht (1982-1985) and at TNO Strategy, Technology and Policy (1985-2004) and TNO Innovation Policy Group (2005-2009). She is Doctorandus in chemistry (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, 1981) and has a Ph.D. in Innovation Management (Wageningen University, 2009).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Food and beverage (F&B) companies are increasingly confronted with important strategic and operational questions as the dynamics in their environment constantly create new challenges. These challenges stimulate the management of many F&B companies to become innovative. Innovation managers have to deal with questions concerning the product innovation strategy, the partners with whom they can co-innovate and the management of the innovation process. Four studies have been carried out that all use empirical data on 129 products of the Dutch F&B industry. Data were collected in 2000 and in 2005. The studies focus on the innovative product itself, rather than on the companies. They provide empirical evidence of the relationships between factors dealing with the product innovation process, the innovation strategy, the innovation network and the market performance of the products. Where most studies only deal with short term performance, these studies also deal with the market performance in the long term (seven years after product launch). This book contributes to a better understanding of the key factors in product innovation in the F&B industry that are related to and explain the product's successful market performance in the short and long term.
