Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. DIVE BOMBER LEARNING TO FLY THE NAVY S FIGHTING PLANES R.A. WINSTON 1939 1ST. Here is another new listing found digging around in my many totes of books collected over the decade (stay tuned for many more too!). Please find: Dive Bomber Learning to Fly the Navy s Fighting Planes by Robert A. Winston- Ensign U.S.N.R. The book was illustrated by Walter E. Dothard who prepared the lovely color title page and many small drawings embedded in the text. This small hard cover book (6 x 8 ¼ inches 191 pages the last few of which are a glossary of aeronautical terms-expressions and colloquialisms ) was published by Holiday House of New York City dated 1939 and the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book is bound in yellow cloth with red titles and designs on cover and spine. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and the boards show some darkening on the edges where they come in contact with the reader s hands. The covers are a bit canted to the right. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and drawings are clean and bright throughout. The endpapers are a bit toned, probably from the effect of the acid in the binding glues. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

WEST ELDARA West Eldora briefly served with the U.S. Navy in the immediate postwar World War I period as the auxiliary ship USS West Eldara (ID-3704), she was in service: 23 Nov 18-16 Sept. 1942 Renamed: 1918: USS West Eldara 1919: West Eldara 1936: Mae Fate: Sunk by U-515, 17 September 1942. . * U.S. Navy service, 1918-1919. West Eldara was launched on 14 October 1918, and completed over the next few weeks. Delivered just too late to see service in the war, she was commissioned into the Navy on 23 November at the Puget Sound Navy Yard for operation with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS) as USS West Eldara (ID-3704). Lt Comdr. John P. Tibbets, USNRF, was placed in command. See a photo of him in this album. . * West Eldara sailed on 8 December, 1918 for San Francisco, California, entering the Mare Island Navy Yard six days later for repairs to her steering gear. Four days after Christmas, the ship got underway from the west coast, bound via the Panama Canal for New York, where she arrived on 14 January 1919. With a cargo of flour and lard, West Eldara departed for Europe on the 24th. Upon her arrival at Gibraltar, the ship was routed on to the Near East, and on 12 February, headed for Constantinople, arriving on the 22nd. Our album documents and records photos of the above. . * After discharging her cargo, West Eldara returned via Gibraltar to the United States, arriving at New York on 7 April. On 16 April the ship departed N.Y. with a cargo of Army supplies destined for Antwerp and Plymouth, England. The vessel departed the British Isles on 12 May bound once more for New York, where she arrived on the 29th. On 4 June, West Eldara was decommissioned and returned the same day to the stewardship of the USSB. [extracted from Wikipedia below]. . *** Our album follows for the most part the above Wikipedia citation of her voyage. However, there is no date stating just which ship's Ensign Schmiltz was stationed on when he visited Tsingtao area [Qingdao, in Shandong province] and stay at Chefoo [Yantai] just above Wei Hai, in an early visit with photos dating 1903-1904. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** OTHER BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES: .
