Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. 2 hardcover volumes. Uniformly bound (and in similar states of repair) in brown leather - original or very early bindings with chipped maroon title labels on the spines. First volume has both boards firmly attached, but leather cracked at hinges. Corners bumped. Some peeled leather and chipping at the crown of the spine. Small, handwritten library number on a faded white label on the spine. Text block good and tight. 299 pages. A couple signatures protrude a bit from the clean line of the foreedge, but they are still securely bound in. Large bookplate from the Morrill Memorial Library/Norwood Historical Society on the inside front cover. Embossed library name on the title page. Attractive 3 page dedication to George Washington in an unusual script font at the front. Small library pocket affixed to inside rear cover with Morrill Library rules. Handwritten library card from the last century shows that no one ever checked it out. Volume 2's front cover is detached, but present. 300 pages. As with volume 1, a couple signatures protrude from the text block but are in no way loosened or weakened. Spine a bit rougher, and without the library label there. The same bookplate, embossed name and rear library pocket at volume 1. Both have pages toned from age and some scattered, inoffensive, foxing. Each volume measures about 4.5 x 7 inches. The author, Rev. Hitchcock was born in Massachusetts, served as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War, then settled in Providence, RI. He was an educator and an abolitionist. An early US imprint. Erstausgabe
First Edition. First Edition. xii, [13]-299; viii, [9]-300pp. 2 vols. 12mo. "This curious piece is dedicated to Mrs. Washington" (Wegelin). One of the earliest American novels, with a decidedly patriotic bias: "We have already suffered by too great an avidity for British customs and manners; it is now time to become independent in our maxims, principles of education, dress and manners, as we are in our laws and government" (Vol. I, pp. 15-16). Hitchcock, a stern Federalist who served as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War, conceived of his novels as antidotes to the melodramas of Goethe and Brown. Evans 22570; ESTC W20740; Wright I 1214; Wegelin p.15 Nineteenth century half tan calf and marbled paper boards, spines gilt with brown morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, wear at extremities. Foxing. Provenance: John Carter Brown (armorial bookplate, withdrawn stamps) xii, [13]-299; viii, [9]-300pp. 2 vols. 12mo.
