[1]f, iv, [vi], 147, [1]. Bound in the original boards, paper spine with a red goatskin label. (New endleaves, upper joint split). This is a large paper copy, with the edges untrimmed. There is some occasional light spotting and offsetting from the plates, but it is a very good copy. The first edition of 1801 had only six plates. In this edition all but two of the plates are by Englefield. Sir Henry Charles Englefield (c.1752-1822) was a fellow of most of the learned societies in London and a member of the Society of Dilettanti from 1781. He made numerous contributions to Archaeologia and his chief topographcial work, Picturesque Beauties of the Isle of Wight was published in 1816.

Stipple engraving, from 'Contemporary Portraits', Sir Charles had a particular interest in improving scientific instruments. He gave giving his name to the Englefield mountain barometer and devised a portable telescope for astronomers.

Contemp. full diced brown calf, decorative gilt borders, spine ruled & decorated in gilt; extremities sl. rubbed. Inscription on verso of leading f.e.p.: 'Mary Gell, the gift of the Author'. An interesting copy. Presented by the author, the English antiquary and astronomer Sir Henry Charles Englefield, 7th Baronet, 1752-1822, to Mary Gell, a member of the Gell family of Hapton Hall, Derbyshire, and relative of Sir William Gell, 1777-1836, classical archaeologist, and his brother Philip Gell, 17751842, British Whig politician. Letters from Sir William to Isabella Gell and from Isabella to Mary, 'her aunt', are recorded in the Derbyshire record office. Inserted at the end of the volume, are two privately printed poems by Englefield, both heavily impressed and printed on four pages, separately dated but continuously paginated. The first, 'To the Memory of William Fifth Duke of Devonshire' (1813) is recorded at Edinburgh on Copac and at Yale only on OCLC. The second, 'Inscription for a Monument', 1801, is unrecorded although both are held at the Museum of English Rural Life which houses the Englefield archive. 'Inscription to a Monument' was written 'to the memory of those sailors, whose bodies were (after the wreck of the Royal George, who sunk at her anchors, at Spithead, in the year 1782) cast up on the beach, at Ryde'.

Small 8vo. pp. 22, [2, advert]; original mounted photograph. Mid nineteenth century half morocco, inner joint broken. The third item is unrecorded although a later, 1876, edition, "considerably enlarged" and running to 30 pages is listed at three locations in the U.K.: Southampton, Birmingham and Lambeth Palace.
