FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF ENCOUNTERS WITH TWO OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PIRATES WORKING DURING THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY FIRST EDITION, occasional light foxing and toning, bookplate of George Harrison, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, 8vo, London, H.M. and T. Norris, 1721 A rare work containing the most detailed account of piracy known in any contemporary periodical (pp.246-256). The section begins with a report .from the Governor of Bermudas, giving a melancholy Acount of the Havock and Depredations committed by the Pirates about the Leeward Islands , with the number of pirates active in the Caribbean thought to be numbering close to 1500. Following this is an account from Captain Andrew Kingston, concerning the exploits of John Bartholomew Roberts(1682-1722), better known as Black Bart . Kingston writes:  'I hope the ships bound from London to Jamaica, may escape the said Roberts, for he designs to keep that station, and destroy all ships that come to these Islands which may fall into his hands. They left me without any manner of clothing; and Roberts brought my brother (chief mate) to the gears, and whipt him within an inch of his life, by reason he had conceal'd two gold rings in his pocket. This is the dismal account I am to give of the voyage.' The infamous Bartholomew Roberts is considered the most successful pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy , capturing over 400 vessels during three years of his career. He also created his own 'Pirate Code' and invented an early variant of the iconic skull and crossbones flag.  Following this account is a proclamation, requested by the Governor of Jamaica, for the suppression of piracy. A bounty is offered for two pirates in particular; Christopher Winter and Nicholas Brown. There is a correspondence between the Governor and the Alcaldes of Trinidad regarding the pirates being harboured there. "I find the Port of Trinidado a Receptacle to Villains of all Nations." The English demands were refused as the two pirates had been baptised in the Catholic faith.  Next is an extract of a letter from Captain Mackra, who lost his ship Cassandra on his way to the East Indies. Unfortunately for Mackra, the pirates who took his ship were under the command of the infamous Edward England. Edward England (1685-1721) began his career under Henry Jennings and Charles Vane. After they accepted the King's Pardon, England sailed for Africa, spawning the career of Bartholomew Roberts and many other pirates along the way. He sailed under a similar flag as Black Sam Bellamy. Like Bellamy, England was known for his kindness and compassion as a leader, unlike many other pirates of the time. A scarce and important work with first hand accounts of encounters with two of the most successful pirates working during The Golden Age of Piracy . …

He begins by explaining the American origins of the Reformed Episcopal Church. 'I am not sure that I grasp your meaning as to "whether there is a full Episcopate in England". I may however say that there is an ample supply of Bishops properly consecrated and duly qualified to perpetuate the Episcopate in an orderly manner.' After discussing 'dress' he continues: 'The little Bishop of Selsey is "used". I generally sign Ecclesl. documents thus, and my Correspondents so designate me at their pleasure.' He discusses the diocese of Selsey, and differences between his and the established church: 'Happily we are Free and not under state control.' He concludes in the hope that 'no differences of polity, discipline or even opinion (where opinion does not contradict the great verities of the divine Word) will estrange those who love our Blessed Lord'. TWO (24 July 1891): He was pleased to read Pentin's reference in his last letter 'to the Rev. W. H. Stent a most worthy man and one of good abilities, a faithful minister of Christ. He was in my Jurisdiction and joined the Estabd Ch. in which I hope & pray that he may be blest & made a blessing.' The letter continues with references to 'Sherren of Weymouth', ecclesiastical dress, the 'Coadjutor Bishop', Dr Gregg, 'Episcopal Autographs'. 'I do not regard the Ref. Ep. Ch. as a Schism. Schism, as I understand it, is a rent or factious division within a Church, [.]'. He is 'sorry to hear just now that Bp. G. is under a cloud'. 'When the jurisdiction of Selsey was allotted to me, I did not change my usual signature, and my Bank account is still in my family name. It is however fit and proper that a Bishop should be sescribed by his See ("sedes"). It may interest you to know that at theh close of next month I terminate the 15th. year of my Episcopate, a voluntary, & perfectly unremunerated office.'.…

The famed "Chronicles" of Jean Froissart (ca. 1337 ca. 1405) are a key resource for the Hundred Years' War and for the chivalric culture of the 14th century. Monstrelet (ca. 1400 1453) picked up where Froissart left off, reporting on the years 1400-44. The works by Robert Fabyan (d. ca. 1512) and John Hardyng (13781465) look at English history from the first century Roman occupation through the Plantagenet and Tudor dynasties ending in the 15th and 16th centuries, respectively. Printer John Rastell (d. 1536) compiled and published "Pastime," which looks at England from 1066-1485. The "Chronicle" by Edward Hall (1497-1547), covering the years 1399-1547, was a key source for Shakespeare's history plays and, according to A. W. Rosenbach's 1938 catalogue, was "the second book printed in English and written by an Englishman referring to America [as well as] the first English historical work mentioning a voyage to America." King's printer to Henry VIII and Edward VI, Richard Grafton (ca. 1506/7 or 1511 1573) produced an abridgement of earlier Chronicles and a continuation of Hall's work, notable, according to DNB, for "his description of the accession of Queen Elizabeth, her welcome in London, and the pageants held along the routefrom the Tower to Westminsterwhich Grafton helped to oversee." "Customs of London," attributed to Richard Arnold (d. ca. 1521), lists mayors, sheriffs, and bailiffs of that city from the time of Richard I to that of Henry VI, and contains its articles, charters, and ordinances. It is easy to picture the present set on the shelves of a stately home---which, given their "country house" condition, is quite possibly where they resided for many years. …
