The Turbinia was the first turbine powered ship built and was launched in 1894. After an accident in 1907 which nearly cut her in two she was taken out of the water in 1908 and in 1926 she was cut in two and the rear half was put on display in the Science Museum with the front half remaining in Newcastle. In 1961 the two halves were re-joined and the complete ship was put on display in The 'Turbinia Hall', which was opened by Sir Caspar John in September 1961.
