See his entry in the Oxford DNB. A 10 x 3 cm slip of paper, cut from the end of a letter in response to a request for an autograph. In good condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'Yours Sincerely / Percy Scott'. Beneath this, in contemporary hand, in pencil: 'Admiral Sir Percy Scott (Terrible)'.

Mint paperback reprint of a 1914 publication. 251pp. This manual first appeared just as the British Army was facing the German invaders in France and Flanders, and laid the groundwork for the subsequent entrenchments which ran from the Channel coast southwards in which the troops lived for nearly for years. It covers, with ample illustrations, hasty and deliberate entrenchment, shelters and cover trenches, concealment, communications and obstruction. The diagrams are plentiful and completely clear and it is a recommended text.…

Zustand: Good. - An original 2-5/8 inch high by 2-3/4 inch wide sienna-toned glossy photograph of Gelasio Caetani observing some classic Roman busts in a studio. The corners of the photograph are attractively cropped in an octagonal pattern and the photo is mounted onto 2-3/4 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide dark green stock which in turn is mounted onto 4 inch high by 4-3/4 inch wide lighter green stock. Dated "Rome MCMXXX" along the top border of the light green mount and inscribed & signed to future U.S. Congressman Seymour Halpern by Caetani along the bottom border of the mount, "To Seymour Halpern with best wishes and success in life / Gelasio Caetani". The top right corner of the mount is chipped. Good. Hailing from the princely Caetani family the Italian nobleman and diplomat Gelasio Caetani (1877-1934) rose to fame as an army officer during World War I. A graduate of the Columbia University School of Mines, he mined gold in Idaho and filled many mining contracts. He founded the San Francisco firm of Caetani, Burch & Hershey before returning home to join the Italian Army Engineers at the outbreak of the First World War. Caetani led a successful attack on the Austro-Hungarian stronghold on top of Col di Lana by tunneling under and excavating their way by hand in the darkness from January through April of 1916. Caetani's troops packed the chambers with nitro-gelatin and blew the summit off the mountain. Promoted to Colonel, Caetani won three medals for bravery. He served as the mayor of Rome after the war and subsequently became Mussolini's Italian ambassador th the United States in 1922. Caetani had created the Garden of Ninfa in 1921. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.…

William and Mary owes its survival to Ewell: he rebuilt it from ruins after the American Civil War, and every morning during several years of closure he is said to have rung the assembly bell to keep the memory of the college fresh. The present item is 1p, landscape 8vo. It is in poor condition, on brittle high-acidity paper, with significant chipping to all the edges except the bottom one, which has resulted in the loss of a few letters of text, and to the engraved illustration of the college in the letterhead. The letter reads: 'Mr. Walter G. Webster / Dear Sir / With the purpo[se] of complying with your request, so politely made[,] and not that I think my autograph worth notice, or preservation, I write, and remain, / Your obedient Servant / Benj. S. Ewell / President of the College of William & Mar[y]'.…

one-page folio. (horizontal folds, several tears with no loss of text). matted & framed (size of frame: 21.75 x 16 inches; 55.2 x 40.6 cm.). A distinguished military engineer, DesBarres served in the British Army in North America during the Seven Years' War, and participated in the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 and of Quebec in 1759. General James Wolfe used a chart which he prepared of the St. Lawrence River and approaches to Quebec in his assault on the city. From 1763 to 1773 DesBarres surveyed and charted the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to New York, which resulted in the publication in 1777 of the Atlantic Neptune, a four-volume atlas "which stands as a landmark in Canadian cartographic achievement" (R.J.Morgan, DCB, VI pp. 196) and is considered to be the most important atlas of North America published in the eighteenth century. He went on to become the first Lieutenant Governor of Cape Breton, 1784-87, the founder of Sydney, and the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, 1804-12. He faced considerable opposition to his administration in both colonies and with the home government and in each instance was recalled to England. The present document is dated just one month before his recall from Prince Edward Island in August of 1812. In it DesBarres reprimands the Grand Jury for overstepping the bounds of their authority although he says he is willing to attribute their statements to "good intentions in an infant colony language which under other circumstances might be very differently received.".…

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. In French. Interesting letter to general Jean-Jacques Germain Pelet-Clozeau in Paris, concerning Dufour's Topographic Map of Switzerland. The letter was to announce the delivery of "a case containing three sheets of the Map of Switzerland", adding to those that Dufour had previously sent. Frustrated about the slow progress of the cartographic project due to the "exiguity of our financial ressources", Dufour expresses his fear that he might "not see the end" of it, which was ultimately unfounded. - In the second part of the letter, Dufour mentions a visit by his daughter, the painter Anne Octavie l'Hardy-Dufour, to Paris, where she had been saddened not to meet Pelet in the house of mutual friends. - Dufour founded the Topographical Bureau in 1838 and started the project for a geometrically accurate representation of Switzerland. The famous Dufour Map was published between 1845 and 1864 and is considered to be a turning point of modern cartography. - Jean-Jacques Germain Pelet-Clozeau (1777-1858) occupied a similar position within the French army as did Dufour in Switzerland. Serving as director of the Dépôt de la Guerre from 1830, Pelet-Clozeau was responsible for the continuous production of the so-called "carte d'état-major" of France that had been officially started in 1827 and was finished in 1880. - With an old collector's ink note "Dufour". To the educator Edmund August Gouzy (born 1831), whom he sends a low-quality photograph for want of a better one, and communicates his and his family's regards to colonel David Zimmerli, who served under his command as a member of the Swiss Confederation's General Staff during the Sonderbund War of 1847: "Voici la photographie que je vous ai promise. Je voudrais qu'elle fut meilleure, mais, n'en ayant pas d'autre, j'ai dû vous l'envoyer telle qu'elle. Je vous prie de me rappeler au bon souvenir de l'excellent Colonel Zimmerli et de ces dames qui ont laissé dans ma famille un bien agréable souvenir [.]". - A small marginal tear. Folio. 1 p. and four lines on bifolium. List of expenses for extensive fortification works executed in June, 1800 on Roda island ("isle de Raouda") located on the Nile in Cairo. The total costs, including the wages of a water carrier and a cameleer, amouted to 72,848 francs that were comfortably within the budget of 84,000 francs. - After the assassination on 14 June 1800 of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, who had been in command of the "Armée d'orient" since Napoleon's departure, the collapse of the French occupation of Egypt was imminent. The Anglo-Ottoman offensive started in March 1801 and reached Cairo by May. On 22 June the French garrison under Augustin Daniel Belliard surrendered and withdrew to Alexandria. The siege of Alexandria from 17 August to 2 September put an end to the Egyptian campaign with the remaining French troops, including Malus, being repatriated to France on British ships according to the terms of the capitulation agreement. - Étienne-Louis Malus was trained to become a military engineer at the École royale du génie de Mézières and the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1796 he joined the Engineers Corps of the revolutionary army and quickly ascended the ranks. His scientific career started during the Egyptian campaign when he became a member of the newly founded Institut d'Égypte. Malus' mathematical work was almost entirely concerned with the study of light; he is known for Malus's law, giving the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. In 1810 Malus was elected into the Académie des Sciences. That same year the Royal Society of London awarded him the Rumford Medal. - Well preserved with small pinholes along left hand edge of the document.…
