This early and significant study on the connection between the nerves and muscle fibers by the prominent German physiologist, Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann (1843-1909), was published when the author was only 20 years old and still 4 years from his Ph.D. at Liepzig (under the ophthalmologist Theodor Ruete). As his academic career progressed, Englemann succeeded Donders at Utrecht (1888) and Du Bois-Reymond at Berlin (1897). He is especially rememberd for his work on the striation of muscle, for his discovery of the chemotactic effect of oxygen on certain bacteria and its use to detect traces of free oxygen, and for his studies of photosynthesis.
