Brill, Boston / Leiden, 2002. XIII,371;16,10,5,8p. ills.(B&W photographs and line drawings). Paperback. Nice copy. ?The study of the classical tradition has long been a disparate one. All too often scholars have tended to concentrate upon the influences of antiquity in one writer or artist, and failed to place these influences in a wider context. Yet, without this context, the classical tradition is little more than an exercise in erudition. This volume (?) is therefore a welcome collection of seventeen essays that draw parallels between the many and diverse aspects of the classical tradition in the early modern period. (?) The volume will be useful to historians of all aspects of the early modern period, as well as historians of the classical tradition and cultural history. (?) the standard of scholarship is generally high, and the essays carry copious references to further scholarship.? (IAN MACGREGOR MORRIS in the Journal of Roman Studies, 2003, p.348). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - This volume deals with the question: how did scholars and artists in the early moden period represent, or rather, recreate (Greek and Roman) history? It appears that ancient history was not just studied so as to reconstruct the past, it was used as a way of understanding and legitimizing the present. -- Sixteen authors from various disciplines have studied the works of scholars and artists in different media so as to reveal how they used ancient history as a rich field of raw material that could be used, recycled and adapted to new needs and purposes. -- The studies in this volume are important for historians of the early modern period from all disciplines, and for all those interested in the reception of classical antiquity. -- TABLE OF CONTENTS -- The Representation of History in Artistic Theory in the Early Modem Period -- Anton Boschloo (Leiden) -- Universals and Particulars. Summary:"This monograph studies the constructions of 'impressive' historical descent manufactured to create 'national', regional, or local antiquities in early modern Europe (1500-1700), especially the Netherlands. This was a period characterised by important political changes and therefore by an increased need for legitimation; a need which was met using historical claims. Literature, scholarship, art and architecture were pivotal media that were used to furnish evidence of the impressively old lineage of states, regions or families. These claims related not only to Classical antiquity (in the generally-known sense) but also to other periods that were regarded as periods of antiquity, such as the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of appropriate 'antiquities' and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in Europe, especially in the Northern Low Countries"-- Provided by publisher.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The thirteen articles in this volume deal with the Neo-Latin emblem book after the birth of the genre with Andrea Alciatos Emblematum libellus (1531). While the interest in emblematics has grown considerably during the last decades, the seminal Neo-Latin production has received relatively little attention. In Mundus Emblematicus an international team of experts in the field makes this part of the emblem tradition accessible to a broad scholarly audience. The articles cover a variety of emblem books published at the time, ranging from influential humanist collections (for instance those by Achille Bocchi, Hadrianus Junius, or Joachim Camerarius) to alchemist (Michael Maier) or religious emblems (such as the books of the Calvinist Théodere de Bèze, or the Jesuit Herman Hugo). In each paper subjects dealt with include the historical context of the work and its makers, the relation between word and image, the structure of the collection as a whole, and the emblematic game (intertextuality in word and image). Moreover, several articles explore the interaction between the emblem and connected literary phenomena, like the commonplace-book, the fable or the use of commentaries. All papers are in English and all examples from Latin texts are translated.
