A nice item, casting light on the practice of the provincial medical profession in Victorian England. See Higginbottom's obituary in the British Medical Journal, 16 March 1895. There are a number of references to Higginbottom in the memoir of 1861 memoir of Marshall Hall (1790-1857) by his widow. For information about Hall, who…died the following year, see his entry in the Oxford DNB, together with that of the otologist Joseph Toynbee (1815-1866). The item is from the papers of Rev. Samuel Walker, successively of Nottingham and Liverpool. 4pp, 12mo, with a concluding fifth page, including Higginbottom's signature, written lengthwise on the first page. Bifiolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Walker is nowhere named as the recipient - the letter is addressed to 'My dear Sir' and signed 'Marshall Hall Higginbottom' - but the references to 'Mrs. Walker', and the recipient's time in Nottingham, seem conclusive. The pleasure Higghinbottom was given by receiving Walker's letter and recognizing his handwriting was mitigated by the news of his continuing indisposition, including the 'relaxation of the throat' he was suffering from when he was in Nottingham. He urges him to 'consult an eminent physician in London, and I am sure you cannot do better than have Mr Toynbee's opinion'. He considers Toynbee 'an extremely clever man', who has 'devoted himself exclusively to the study of the Ear'. As his uncle 'Dr Hall' has 'not made diseases of the Ear a distinct Study', he will not recommend Walker to his 'best attention', but he is willing to write to Toynbee, having received 'a letter from him in reference to a patient not long since'. Should Walker wish for 'a change of air', the Higginbottoms will be pleased to receive him. His 'professional engagements' have prevented him from increasing his 'study of old Divinity' since Walker was in Nottingham, but he is looking forward to doing so in future. He sends the regards of his father and 'Mrs. H. Florence, Mr & Mrs. Hall' to the recipient and 'Mrs. Walker'.

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. After thanking him for his 'last (and other) kind letters', he continues: 'After some hesitation (smile?) I have made up my mind to keep my engagement tomorrow to dine with the Imperial Federationists at the Freemason's Tavern. Therefore I shoud be very glad if you could if i…t can be managed by Lydia [i.e. Sir James's wife] without great inconvenience find me a bed for tomorrow Saturday night.' It 'goes against' his 'cooler judgment to take the journey only for the aforesaid dinner', and seeing them all in Harewood Place 'will be an (additional) pleasure making the journey more reasonable'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

For information on the recipient William Frederick Cleveland, see his obituary, BMJ, 3 December 1898. 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf, which carries the postscript: 'If you write I will arrange for Tuesday -'. Folded twice. He be…gins by apologising for not being able to meet Cleveland that day or the next: 'I have to go to Surbiton & Hampton this afternoon & on my return start for a consult. in Cumberland & cannot be home till Monday night -'. He concludes with 'regret not to have the pleasure of meeting you & Dr Jackson'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. For Murchison and the subject of the letter, the eminent Scottish physician and medical author James Copland (1791-1870), see the Oxford DNB. Both items bifoliums; and both in good condition, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. ONE: 3pp, 12mo. He begins by saying that he has seen Sir H…enry Thompson (1820-1904), who 'cannot possibly meet us to-morrow but he will be at Dr Coplands at 3.40 on Thursday That is the day of my Law Case but I will be there if I can'. In the meantime 'it might be well to suspend the injections of Bladder until you see Sir Henry as he seems to be opposed to them and trust to the iron the bladder of ice, and the frequent introduction into the rectum of small pieces of ice, with the edges rounded off in water & well greased'. TWO: 2pp, 12mo. Headed 'Sunday Evening | Dr. James Copland's case'. The letter begins: 'Dear Dr Cleveland | I fear that the poor Doctor is almost beyond our Art. I think he is sinking more from uraemia than fresh haemorrhage and I have recommended a large [?] over the stomach'. He also thinks that Copland 'ought to have his bowels freely acted on either by a strong Cathartic enema, or if this fails, by one or two drops of Croton Oil by mouth. This I have left for you to decide.' Copland died two days after the writing of this letter.
