Uzanne's charming observations centre around the river-side literary communities in Paris, between the Pont Royal and Pont Sully. Taking the reader through the quays, stall by stall, heromanticises the symbiotic relationship between bookdealers and their diverse community of bookworms. Octave Uzanne was a nineteenth-century bibliophile, author and journalist. Founder and president of the Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains, Uzanne also contributed frequently to literary publications including Le Figaro and Le Gaulois. His contributions to literary studies primarily focussed on fin-de-siècle fashion and femininity. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and vignettes throughout.
